-- WPS (Western Psychological Services), a leading independent publisher of educational and psychological assessments based in Torrance, California, recently launched CAPs (Clinical Assessment of Pragmatics) that provides comprehensive information on pragmatic language skills and social language development of children and young adults.

CAPs is a revolutionary assessment for individuals 7 to 18 years old that uses video scenes of real people in social situations to assess an examinee’s ability to understand and use pragmatic language. The assessment norms are based on a sample of 914 young adults and children in the United States between the ages of 7 to 18 years matching U.S. Census data and stratified within individual age group on the basis of ethnic group, race, gender, social or economic status, and geographic region.

CAPs is used for assessing an examinee’s understanding and use of pragmatic language, including non-verbal cues, as well as overall dynamics of social context. The video scenes depict real-life situations. After viewing each video clip, the examinee provides answers to questions posed by the examiner.

An increasing number of school students and young adults are referred for pragmatic language evaluations, but speech-language pathologists and school psychologists do not have access to effective and efficient assessment instruments in this area. In a typical CAPs scenario, examinees are asked two types of questions: On the pragmatic judgment (receptive pragmatic) subtests, they are asked to judge the appropriateness of a wide number of social situations. Similarly, on the pragmatic performance (expressive pragmatic) subtests, examinees are presented with a typical social situation and the question: “What would you say and how?”

CAPs evaluates the overall pragmatic judgment abilities of the examinee insofar as comprehending the respective social situations. Moreover, it is also used for testing the ability of the examinees to express themselves appropriately under multiple social situations. The overall pragmatic performance aspect of the assessment is a unique feature, allowing the examiner to analyze the non-verbal as well as the verbal responses of examinees. CAPs is an effective assessment for speech-language pathologists and other practitioners around the world to derive a comprehensive understanding of the pragmatic language needs of examinees across multiple social situations.
