Video Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

Online video technology and social media can combine to give entrepreneurs a competitive advantage in online marketing.

-- Financial services expert Steve Savant has a catchword for his approach to online marketing: Edutainment! An article published Jan. 2, 2015 in Upstart Business Journal titled, “How to Shine in a YouTube World," defines his vision for small businesses and entrepreneurs to incorporate a strategy that combines entertainment and education (“edutainment”) into a dialog platform and unleash it to millions in YouTube format via social media.

The host of “Let’s Get Down to Business,” a daily talk show for advisers, and “Steve Savant’s Money, the Name of the Game,” a weekend talk show for consumers, both feature top experts in the field of financial planning and products. While Savant admits finding a little glamour and public prestige in being a talk show host and financial columnist, an objective of his financial shows is to be more exciting than the others.

“Because money makes the world go ‘round, financial shows should be as exciting as ‘Shark Tank’ or Jim Cramer,” Savant says. “But they’re not. Many of them are like watching a gold fish in a fish bowl,” stating that the common element that makes those shows so interesting is a strategy that integrates education and entertainment into a dialog platform, once relegated only to TV. While online video may overtake television someday, it is on track to dominate social media for the first time in 2015 while edutainment videos rise to the forefront of most social media campaigns.

Having interviewed some of the top names in the financial services industry over the last 40 months, the host and financial expert admits to learning more about money in that time than during the last 40 years.

The journal article talks about the art of hosting financial talk shows and maintaining a street-smart dialog that everyone can understand. “Experts may need dialog to convey genius; to draw out the gold from their dross and remain on point. The knowledgeable are not necessarily articulate.” Show guests are highly educated, hold multiple credentials and use ‘MBA linguistics with a dollop of Grey Poupon homiletics,’ but it has been shown that the vast majority of the viewing audience prefers more of a ‘French’s mustard’ street-style approach.”

Online video is indicative of where social media marketing is going, but talking over the audience can hinder success.

Containing subject matter into six-minute segments can also be challenging, so time is always a mitigating factor. “Aim at 80 percent of the audience to hit your target market.”

While stats and facts are important, Savant states that analytics can only take an expert so far—larger than life personalities tend to trump genius “A personality that can fill a room will pull people in, regardless of their knowledge base.”

One of the show’s most popular guests is nationally recognized platform speaker and retirement expert Tom Hegna, who is highly educated with industry credentials and an overwhelming command of subject matter, while still managing to drive his presentation with personality, and not micromanage his message in the minutia of  facts.

“He’s engaging and humorous, and can impart his message in such a way that the audience can receive and understand it on the first pass,” Savant says.“ Author of the new blockbuster book, “Don’t Worry, Retire Happy,” Hegna was featured on the Public TV Special of the same name in December 2014.  (View video: Lifetime Income You Can't Outlive – Tom Hegna).

It is noted that sometimes controversy draws viewers. Investment adviser and cultural contrarian Kim Butler, founder of “Partners for Prosperity,” airs grievances against the financial planning industry in her book, “Busting the Financial Planning Lies.”  The book’s established mission is to replace conventional money wisdom with traditional money truths. Savant calls Butler the matron of money, a Joan of Arc crusader separating financial fact from fiction. (View video: “Why Financial Planning doesn’t Work – Kim Butler”).

Attorney Ilya Lerma of Jeffrey I. Ostreicher, P.C., whose practice targets the wrongdoings of insurance professionals and financial advisers, has also been a guest of the show. “Formidable and unrelenting, with a cross-examination style like that of a grand inquisitor, Lerma  actually delivered a service by explaining how insurance and financial advisers expose themselves to unnecessary litigation and how to best implement business practices to insulate against lawsuits.” (View video: “Calling Yourself an Expert May Expose you to Damages”).

According to Savant, with social media outlets promoting their own indigenous video platforms, videos will become the centerpiece of business outreach online.

“Most businesses are online, but they’ll soon be on camera, so, ‘Let’s Get Down to Business!’”
