Umar Abdul Shakoor Sorathia, honorary consul general for the Republic of Seychelles in Mozambique, participated in the biennial Seychelles Honorary Consuls Conference, where he addressed key issues of sustainable development, economic resilience, and diaspora engagement. The conference, held in Victoria, Seychelles, brought together honorary consuls from around the world to discuss strategies for promoting Seychelles' interests globally.
During the conference, Mr. Sorathia was commended for his involvement in the Adopt-A-District program, an initiative launched by the Department of Foreign Affairs to bring closer ties between Seychelles' diplomatic corps and local communities. The program encourages diplomats to contribute to the development of specific districts in Seychelles.
Umar Abdul Shakoor Sorathia, who has served as Honorary Consul General since 2005, states, "The Adopt-A-District program is a prime example of how diplomacy can have a direct, positive impact on local communities. Investing in everything between playground upgrades and restoration initiatives, we're ultimately investing in the future of Seychelles' youth."
Adopt-A-District has already benefited five districts in Seychelles, with projects ranging from upgrading community centers to enhancing local facilities. Mr. Sorathia's contribution focused on upgrading and enhancing a local district's community playground.
"I wish to create lasting partnerships between Seychelles' international representatives and the communities we serve. This program lets us contribute meaningfully to the country's development and directly improve the lives of thousands of people," Sorathia explains.
The conference also addressed broader issues facing Seychelles, including sustainable tourism development, economic diversification, and climate change resilience. As the CEO of Sorathia Investments, a diversified multinational company engaged in manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, and travel services, Umar Sorathia brought valuable insights to these discussions.
"Seychelles faces unique challenges as a small island nation, but it also has tremendous potential," Sorathia comments. “With the right connections and a focus on long-term development, we can build a better future for all Seychellois." The Honorary Consuls Conference concluded with a promise to continue promoting Seychelles' interests abroad while supporting local development initiatives.
