-- TriPyramid Ventures has begun work on Lake Biminy, a rural development in the north of England built around a man-made fishing lake, locally owned craft studios, stone lodges and a radio and optical observatory. The land held a Roman fort more than 2,000 years ago.
Dr. Eric Balki leads the project and has designed it as a working model for rural economic renewal built on food, craft and science. Local ownership is the condition he places on the whole plan. Staff and suppliers will be drawn from surrounding communities, and revenue from the lodges funds the parts of the development that carry the most financial risk.
The lake is man-made, scaled deliberately and stocked with fish. Mornings are planned around angling, with boats out early and the lodges and cafe open from first light.
A cafe on the shoreline will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner sourced from nearby farms, with fish from the lake, seafood from the Scottish coast and coffee from a roaster in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Menus will change by season.
Craft and art shops around the water will be run by local ceramicists, printmakers, woodworkers and textile artists. Studios open directly onto the lakeside paths, and each one trades year-round.
The stone lodges run along the shoreline and fund the rest of the development. Each has floor-to-ceiling windows and a log fire, and Wi-Fi is installed throughout.
Balki plans a radio and optical observatory at the top of the main shops building. A Canadian telescope manufacturer has signed a sponsorship deal, and Balki is working with academics and scientists on plans for deep-space observation and communications. School and university groups will use the instruments by day. At night the observatory opens to guests, and the dark skies over the site make the Milky Way visible without a telescope.
New footpaths will connect the site to the Pennine Way. Walkers on the long-distance route will be able to break for a night at the lake with a bed and hot food.
Lodges, trails and paths will take their names from Roman commanders, local deities and lost roads. The project will also run evening storytelling events and interpretive installations covering the fort and the border history around it.
