-- Møns Klint, the spectacular natural feature on the Danish island of Møn, is one of the most recent additions to the UNESCO-recognised list of heritage sites, with experts in Nordic travel at the Baltic Travel Company offering several holiday packages with ample time to see the towering chalk cliffs in person.
Ideal for hiking, bird watching, and photography, the cliffs date back 70 million years but have been a little-known wonder until now, with visitors seeking ways to travel to the island to see the ancient landscape and the fossil-strewn beaches below.

UNESCO Grants World Heritage Status to Møns Klint
Added to the UNESCO list this year, Møns Klint achieved recognition as one of the most complete and accessible examples of a landscape shaped by ice-age glaciers in the distant past, with the white chalk edges formed when glaciers exerted enormous pressure, bending and folding the chalk and sediment.
This has left a dramatic landscape, with the cliffs soaring more than 100 metres into the sky and ongoing erosion that means locals and lucky visitors often find fossils embedded in the chalk and scattered across the surrounding beaches.
As a habitat on Møn Island, which was already a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the cliffs are home to unique plants, grasses, and no fewer than 18 types of orchids, along with the Large Blue butterfly, an endangered and protected species.
While there have been significant increases in interest following the announcement, Møns Klint has long been a hidden gem for bird watchers and conservation enthusiasts, with opportunities to see buzzards, hawks, geese, swans, and wading birds nesting, migrating, and feeding around the cliffs.
The surrounding coastline and sea are just as beautiful, with the water having a distinct green/blue colour, caused by the dynamic erosion of the chalk, and stretches of incredible island beech forests, where trees thrive in the mineral-rich soil.
Guidance on Accessing Møns Klint for First-Time Travellers
Managing Director, Birthe Nielsen from the Baltic Travel Company says, ‘Møns Klint, and Møn Island are fascinating places to experience the raw, untouched beauty of these ancient landscapes, with options to hike up the hills to see a phenomenal view from the top or join a boat tour for an alternative perspective, and the island is just two hours from Copenhagen.
Around 250,000 visitors head to the cliffs each year. Still, we've seen enormous upticks in visitors enquiring about how to build this into their itineraries or seeking advice on the best and easiest ways to organise transport connections.
While a lot may depend on the free time you have in your schedule and the time of year you're travelling, we can recommend low-cost train and bus services, or pre-planned driving routes, if you're heading to Denmark on a fly-drive road trip!
There are several bridges that take you straight to Møn Island, including the main Queen Alexandrine bridge that connects Møn with Zealand. The crossing over the Ulv Sund is itself a wonderful way to soak in the fresh air and panoramic views.
It’s been wonderful to see Møns Klint recognised by UNESCO, but there are plenty of other things to do and see on this remarkable island, with an interactive GeoCenter and astonishing stargazing. The island is one of the first Dark Sky Parks in Scandinavia, owing to the lack of light pollution, which means you can spend an evening seeing the Milky Way in startling clarity.
Another highlight is the nearby, car-free Nyord nature reserve, with its tiny village, Nyord Sogn, and narrow, winding streets, and the charming Noorbohandelen speciality shop which stocks local delicacies and fine spirits such as homemade spelt bread, whiskeys, oils, and mustards.’
