Shortly after online dating sites like Match.com and Jdate came onto the scene in the mid to late 1990’s, millions of people began signing up to find love and it became the popular way to find dates. For certain demographic groups, online sites and mobile dating apps are even more practical. Individuals who identify themselves as transgender, for instance, often feel shunned in their communities. Well, dating has just gotten a lot easier for them……Transdr was recently introduced as the first trans dating app.
As development for the app was completed just a few months ago, it has already become an instant hit with almost 310,000 transgender men and women registered on the site, looking for love and friendship. Although some dating sites have a gay or transgender category, Transdr is exclusively for those who identify as transgender and their admirers.
Justin Robert, the CEO of the Transdr app, explains the reason for its popularity. He estimates that, “in 2019, there will be a sharp increase in the number of transgender people coming out in public, more than any year before. However, dating and social contact are still the two major barriers set by the public and by themselves, which are also the two primary factors that lead to suicide. Hence, trans dating apps are becoming an inevitable alternative for them. With the rocketing development of mobile dating apps, an increasing number of individuals who identify as transgender are turning to mobile dating. Compared to real-life dating, Transdr is a lot easier and safer without worrying about their appearance and behavior.” Dating is certainly harder for this demographic because of the stigmatism. “They need a comfortable place to meet and date without judgement,” adds Justin Robert.
The app is free and operates in a format similar to Tinder and Grindr where users can swipe right or left on a profile. If both users swipe right, indicating mutual interest, they can then exchange messages with each other.
No real names needed. Users can choose a favorite nickname. They can voice chat, message chat, and send private photos instantly to keep privacy. They may search people nearby, or used the advanced search option to narrow down the field and find ideal matches.
The timing could not be more ideal. 2018 has been a remarkable year for the LGBTQ community. For instance, there are more transgender people than ever running for political offices in the United States, including the governor’s office and congress. In addition, the suicide rate of transgender individuals is reducing dramatically.
According to the World Population Review and the Williams Institute, nearly 1.9 million U.S. adults identify as transgender, accounting for 0.6% of the total population. Sorted by the population of transgender people in these states, the results show that California has the largest transgender population among all states with nearly 300,000. The next highest populated transgender states are Texas, Florida, New York and Georgia.
The app also identifies the top 10 cities in the U.S. with the highest percentage of transgender individuals. They are San Francisco (0.70%); Austin (0.69%); Portland (0.62%); Seattle (0.62%); Boston (0.61%); New Orleans (0.58%); New York (0.54%); Columbus (0.52%); Salt Lake City (0.50%); and Atlanta (0.47%).
With almost 310,000 members, Transdr has 16.19 percent of the transgender population already signed up on their app. Justin Robert says, “This is just the beginning. We are planning to cover 30 to 40 percent of transgender online dating market by the end of next year.”
