Explaining SADI-S (SIPS) Surgery
The modified duodenal switch (DS) with single anastomosis (SADI/SIPS) procedure involves creating a gastric sleeve that removes approximately 80% of the stomach. The malabsorptive portion reroutes a portion of the small intestine to create two separate pathways and a common channel.
The shorter digestive loop allows food to flow from the stomach to the common channel. The longer biliopancreatic loop carries bile from the liver to the common channel. The diversion limits the amount of time that food mixes with the body’s digestive juices, thus reducing the number of calories absorbed by a patient.
Differences between SADI-S and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
SADI-S preserves the pylorus, the outlet of the stomach that allows food to pass into the small intestine. This also prevents partially digested food and digestive juices from re-entering the stomach by preserving the pylorus, SADI-S provides control of solid emptying and reduces the chances of dumping syndrome.
