Tijuana Bariatric Center Now Offering New SADI-S (SIPS) Surgery

Tijuana Bariatric Center has released information regarding the new SADI-S surgery for patients with a high body mass index.

Patients with a high body mass index (BMI) now have a new surgical alternative available known as the SADI-S surgery. Dr Fernando Garcia and his bariatric staff at Tijuana Bariatric Center now offer SADI-S (single anastomosis duodeno-ileal sleeve), a safe new bariatric procedure with a restrictive and a malabsorptive component. SADI-S is less invasive than a Roux-en-Y bypass but still provides excellent weight loss results.

Explaining SADI-S (SIPS) Surgery

The modified duodenal switch (DS) with single anastomosis (SADI/SIPS) procedure involves creating a gastric sleeve that removes approximately 80% of the stomach. The malabsorptive portion reroutes a portion of the small intestine to create two separate pathways and a common channel.

The shorter digestive loop allows food to flow from the stomach to the common channel. The longer biliopancreatic loop carries bile from the liver to the common channel. The diversion limits the amount of time that food mixes with the body’s digestive juices, thus reducing the number of calories absorbed by a patient.

Differences between SADI-S and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

SADI-S preserves the pylorus, the outlet of the stomach that allows food to pass into the small intestine. This also prevents partially digested food and digestive juices from re-entering the stomach by preserving the pylorus, SADI-S provides control of solid emptying and reduces the chances of dumping syndrome.

Good candidates for SADI-S surgery

Ideal candidates for SADI-S are highly motivated and committed to consistent vitamin and protein supplementation throughout their lives. You must be willing to foster a close relationship with your doctor and a bariatric nutritionist.

In addition, you must also meet other criteria for SADI-S surgery.

- A BMI of over 50
- Or a BMI of 30-49 and certain co-morbidities

The advantages of SADI-S surgery

- Faster recovery period with many patients returning to their daily life within a week
- Less invasive procedure with fewer complications
- Rapid weight loss with patients losing up to 40lbs in the first months
- Ability to regulate sugar levels
- Less hunger by removing the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone
