The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists Weighs in on Study Discussing Caffeine's Benefits for Hair Growth

The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization that offers hair loss treatment services, is weighing in on a new study explaining the growth-promoting effects of caffeine on human hair follicles.

Researchers at the University of Lubeck in Germany treated male and female human hairs with testosterone and caffeine in a test tube. They discovered that this not only made the hair grow faster, but the caffeine counteracted the effect of testosterone in causing baldness. (Source: Fischer, T.W., et al., “Differential effects of caffeine on hair shaft elongation, matrix and outer root sheath keratinocyte proliferation, and transforming growth factor-β2/insulin-like growth factor-1-mediated regulation of the hair cycle in male and female human hair follicles in vitro,” British Journal of Dermatology, published online October 30, 2014; http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bjd.13114/abstract.)

“For many people, having that first cup of coffee in the morning gives them a much-needed kick-start to the day,” says Ken Robson, founder of the Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “The study may be in its preliminary stages, but a hair growth product that contains caffeine, such as shampoo, could be ideal for people who are going bald.”

Robson notes that a traditional hair loss treatment service is still the best option for people who have already lost their hair as a caffeine-based shampoo can only keep the hair roots active, but can’t do much for hair that is already lost.

“Science is advancing when it comes to combatting hair loss,” says Robson. “Although the study does show how caffeine can be beneficial in hair retention products, we recommend sticking to the proven methods for stimulating hair growth.”
