The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists Addresses Health Risks Associated with Hair Loss

The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists comments on the associated health risks of hair loss and balding.

The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization offering hair loss treatments for over 25 years, is addressing the serious health risks associated with hair loss, as recently discovered by experts.

Psychologist Corinne Sweet has raised the alarm on hair loss and balding, stating that they can have significant psychological effects and other associated health problems on men. According to experts, hair loss can lead to increased risk of mental problems and death from suicide. “A lot of people don’t realize how much emphasis our culture places on hair and how big of an effect balding can have on men,” says Ken Robson, founder of the Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “It might come as a surprise to some that hair loss is linked to mental illness, but depression and anxiety are actually fairly common reactions.”

According to Sweet, roughly one quarter of men experiencing hair loss suffer from anxiety, although the number is actually thought to be higher since some men are reluctant to admit to such problems. Sweet says that much of this anxiety is driven by men’s belief that they are losing their masculinity.

“Hair is often associated with youth or sexual virility, so when men begin to lose hair, they can also feel like they’re losing their looks or sexual appeal,” says Robson. “It can be a big blow to a lot of men’s confidence. They may feel less attractive with partners, or they may just have general anxiety about people judging them.”

Sweet also linked hair loss to a wider range of health problems, including depression, social phobia, substance abuse, and even suicide; she stated that there is a particular risk of men using medication to cope with developing mental issues.

“I don’t think many men would commit suicide or become addicted to drugs only because of their hair,” notes Robson. “That seems like a bit of a stretch. However, hair loss can certainly play into or trigger anxiety and depression, which can eventually lead to these problems.”

While Robson believes that serious mental issues need to be treated by a qualified medical professional, he says that men experiencing the first signs of hair loss have many options available which can help them keep their hair.

“We now know that lifestyle factors, such as our diets and stress levels, have an impact on the health of hair,” says Robson. “Simply making some lifestyle changes can help keep hair from falling out or thinning. Getting all of the right nutrients, performing regular exercises, and relaxing can make a difference in some cases.”

For men with male-pattern baldness or more extensive hair loss, there are now a wider range of techniques and treatments available. Shampoos and lotions can help slow hair loss, while hair transplants can restore permanent hair.

“With hair transplants, we basically have a cure for hair loss,” says Robson. “It’s a permanent solution to restore growing hair, and it’s cost-effective too. There is really no reason to become too worried or depressed about hair loss when we have these treatments available.”
