Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed), Malaysia’s leading multi-disciplinary medical centre today unveiled the revolutionary Leksell Gamma Knife Icon™, an advanced radiation machine that can be used to treat a number of neurological disorders and brain conditions that typically require open neurosurgery. The Gamma Knife Icon™ is the latest version which also allows for staged or fractionated treatments.
As part of the launch gambit, SunMed illustrated the journey of the Gamma Knife treatment through the comma symbol, which symbolizes how the newly launched Gamma Knife Icon™ can remove tumours so fine that it doesn’t put a stop to one’s quality of life. Such advancements in neurosurgery provide neurosurgeons with an additional benefit in ensuring the safety of patients and lesser complications from surgery.
“Exciting advances in cancer treatment are paving the way to better treatments and possibly more cures. However, in spite of this, there remains an urgent need for innovative and effective treatment options for cancer patients in Malaysia. The Gamma Knife Icon™ allows SunMed to provide a treatment that is more reliable and one that is administered with greater accuracy. This treatment method is a game changer, with very little discomfort and lesser radiation dose to the surrounding healthy tissue of the patient”, explains Mr Lau Beng Long, Managing Director, Sunway Group Healthcare Services.
He adds “As part of the vision to be one of the leading medical centres in the ASEAN region, we at SunMed want our patients to have access to leading edge clinical practices and technologies, especially when dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Even patients with serious disorders can be treated with this non-invasive procedure in one day with no overnight hospital stay.”
The Gamma Knife brain radiosurgery is the most precise radiosurgery device for the treatment of cranial tumors and other functional neurologic conditions. The system uses an array of 192 precise beams of gamma radiation that produces a powerful dose of concentrated radiation when converged at the treatment site. Adaptive DoseControl technology makes sure that the proper amount of radiation hits the target from every direction.
These improvements allow doctors to treat patients with sub-millimeter accuracy and shorter treatment times with minimal and usually no damage to the surrounding structures. It can be used to treat a number of neurological disorders including brain metastases, arteriovenous malformations, facial nerve pain (trigeminal neuralgia), meningioma, acoustic neuromas, gliomas and pituitary tumours.
Speaking at the launch, Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Ravi Krishnapillai said “The Gamma Knife technology allows doctors to precisely target areas within the brain with the aid of various imaging techniques. These provide a 3D view of the target and surrounding brain structures. Furthermore, this latest version allows surgeons to treat larger lesions without any significant complications from using a higher dose of radiation for the larger lesion. This means that anything that could not be treated in a single dose (like a larger tumour or mass) can now be staged over a few weeks.”
A recipient of the Gamma Knife treatment, Jesse Teh, shared her experience during the launch. “As a cancer patient, I was always afraid of cancer treatments and the side effects. This led me to seek natural treatment methods, which were not effective. Thankfully, I was introduced to Gamma Knife at SunMed and found the treatment effective, yet painless and surprisingly relaxing. I had undergone a mask-based treatment, which takes about 30 minutes each round. I was able to go home right after the treatment. Now, I am able to resume simple daily activities which I struggled with before the treatment.”
The launch of the Gamma Knife Icon™ follows the successful launch of SunMed’s Let’s ACE campaign, or in full ‘Let’s Attack Cancer Effectively’ last December. Earlier in February, SunMed also hosted its first Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Malaysian Neurosurgical Trainees and Neurosurgeons, further strengthening SunMed’s commitment to fight cancer. Its Cancer and Radiosurgery Centre is renowned and equipped with a one-stop information, medical care and support facility supported by a multi-disciplinary team of various consultants, physicists, allied health staff and nurses.
To-date, SunMed has successfully treated 37 patients with the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon™.
