ChipperList - Online Startup Brings Transparency and Disruption to Senior Housing Marketing Channels

Locally owned ChipperList has recently launched an innovative business model (similar to the YELP model) which favors the senior housing consumer, reflecting national trends in senior housing marketing. All senior communities toured, reviewed and researched by ChipperList receive complimentary basic listings. After extensive due diligence, only three-to-five star rated senior communities are offered enhanced listing packages on ChipperList for a monthly fee, depending on how aggressively they wish to manage their online reputation. Due to the aging population demographic and San Diego's history as a retirement destination, senior housing is big business and very completive.

According to a July 9, 2014 article in Senior Housing News, Newcomers Fight to Disrupt Senior Living Leads Landscape by Alyssa Gerace, several of the nationwide lead generator giants have a firm grasp on the market as it has evolved in recent years. These "…referral sites only match consumers with senior care providers they're partnered with…whether or not they're the best fit. They're pay to play, and often the best interest or need of the consumer isn't in the equation." writes Alyssa. Another term for this referral model is "placement"; services are free to the consumer and the placement counselor is paid by the community, often a full month's rent. She quotes another entrepreneur as stating, "…the industry is ripe for disruption…it's going to be through transparency and insight."

Initially conceived as a directory and ratings website similar to hotels.com, founder Chip Allen quickly realized that senior housing was more nuanced than hotels. All too often, senior communities have citations or deficiencies for poor quality care (from the State of California Community Care Licensing Division) that are difficult for the consumer to access. With the goal of increasing transparency to the consumer, these reports are uploaded on the ChipperLIst website, a unique offering to the senior housing consumer, for free.

After a successful "crowdfunding" effort earlier this year, ChipperList has rapidly expanded from the pilot product development phase. Founded in 2013 (after participation in the San Diego Founder Institute four month CEO mentorship program) by a team of technology experts, social entrepreneurs and eldercare advocates, founder Chip Allen is quoted as saying, "I strive to put people before profits, and integrity before income."
