-- Southwestern College may be a small institution in Santa Fe, but it offers a world class education for those pursuing a Masters in Counseling or Art Therapy. The school provides a holistic environment and a curriculum that draws upon ancient world wisdom, modern social science, and current developments in the fields of counseling, psychology, art therapy, neurobiology, quantum physics and conscious leadership. For students who wish to utilize a holistic and spiritually-sourced approach in their professional careers, the range of studies is a powerful incentive to enroll. Adding to the appeal is the opportunity to study in the most artistic city in the United States. These are just a few of the reasons the college cites as examples of why they are celebrating a record enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year.
“We provide a unique educational experience at Southwestern College,” says College President Dr. Jim Nolan. “Since we only offer Master’s Degrees in Counseling or Art Therapy and Counseling we can ensure that we have one of the most focused programs available. We are not spending our energies or resources on undergraduate programs, a doctorate or programs that are not related to helping and healing professions.”
Thought and industry leaders agree, and lend expertise to the school by holding seminars, leading ancient ceremonies or providing guidance to Southwestern College as a member of the Board of Advisors.
“Southwestern College is offering the education the world wants, and our increasing enrollment numbers demonstrate that,” says Nolan. “Traditional programs are stuck in a paradigm that has helped create the mess that pervades the organized field of psychology. I believe the title of Hillman and Ventura’s book, ‘We’ve had 100 years of psychotherapy and the world’s getting worse’ captures that trend nicely.”
Now in its 34th year, Southwestern College’s mission statement reads “Transforming Consciousness through Education.” It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also being challenged to transform themselves at a deep, long term level.” “Most programs are almost exclusively content-based”, says Nolan. “At Southwestern College we realize the fundamental error of that approach, and focus on the quality and depth of the individual receiving the content.”
