One of the bestselling solar panel products of Sunpower Corp, located in California, is currently out of stock and this is affecting sales of their UK distributor. Solar & Green, — solar panel installers, based in Yorkshire have been left in a state of disappointment due to the shortage of environmentally friendly energy products.
Solar & Green were well aware of the European Commission’s displeasure at the under-pricing of Chinese solar panels coming into Europe. They knew that a dumping tax was going to be slapped on the Chinese for their export behaviour and that it could affect the availability of solar panels in the near future. However, they didn’t expect a shortage to impact products coming out of the US.
The UK dumping tax on Chinese made solar panels was expected to be in the region of 60%. This is a financial cost that will be off-putting to many importers of solar panels. The reason for this tax and consequential price hike is that panels were being undersold due to overproduction of them as a result of very attractive tax incentives to developing green industries in China.
Karen Hird of Solar & Green said, "we thought there might be a shortage of panels coming out of Asia, as solar panel installers bought them up before the price was hiked from the tax increase. However we are very disappointed that we cannot source our best selling product from SunPower".
As SunPower’s UK partner, Solar & Green have installed hundreds of this very popular model. With this current shortage, they cannot see their waiting list clearing until June or July. SunPower’s solar panels are their bestselling products due to their cleverly designed components. The panels use a unique silicon solar cell that was invented at Stanford University and it is known for its high efficiency at producing power.
This interruption to business when it comes to SunPower solar panels comes at an unfortunate time for Solar & Green. Most recently the installation of panels has become very popular with their customer base and are not to be restocked until July in the UK. Not only do they offer the opportunity of reducing the business financial overheads of high energy bills, but they can improve brand image by being environmentally friendly and can also enable businesses to find another income stream through selling surplus energy.
"Even though we cannot install SunPower products currently, it’s still a good time for businesses to look into installing solar panels. Businesses can make the most savings out of any of our clients as much of their energy requirements are typically needed within daylight hours, so they can really reap the benefits” said Karen Hird.
