Scholars and Religious Leaders Engage in Dialogue on African Indigenous Spirituality at UNISA

The University of South Africa (UNISA) recently hosted a landmark event that brought together scholars, religious leaders, and cultural figures for an enlightening book review of An Introduction to Afrikan Indigenous Spirituality.

Pretoria, South Africa – The University of South Africa (UNISA) recently hosted a landmark event that brought together scholars, religious leaders, and cultural figures for an enlightening book review of An Introduction to African Indigenous Spirituality. Authored and inspired by Imboni Dr. Uzwe-Lezwe Radebe, the book offers a deep exploration into the principles and practices of African Indigenous Spirituality, addressing the critical distinctions between religions, universal spirituality, and traditional African beliefs.

The event was organized by The Revelation Spiritual Home (TRSH), one of South Africa’s largest and most influential Traditional African Churches. Led by Dr. Radebe, an esteemed spiritual leader and author, has been at the forefront of efforts to promote and preserve African spiritual traditions, and his recent work has sparked conversations on the significance of reconnecting with these ancestral teachings in the contemporary world.

The book review session served as a platform for a rich dialogue on the importance of observing and honoring African Indigenous Spirituality, exploring how these practices can contribute to both personal growth and the collective well-being of society. The theme of the event focused on the urgent need for Africans to reconnect with their spiritual traditions in order to strengthen cultural identity and societal unity. 

Among the distinguished guests and speakers were Ms. Bongiwe Zwane, a renowned broadcaster, who spoke on the importance of preserving African spiritual traditions while navigating the challenges of modernity. Palesa Hloele, a respected author, who discussed the role of African spirituality in literature and cultural expression. Nkululeko Mfecane, Chairperson of African Hidden Voices, who offered insights into the collective efforts to promote African spiritual knowledge through the publication of the book. Representatives from the Church of Scientology founded by L. Ron Hubbard, renowned for their humanitarian efforts across all fronts and community activism in combatting social ills. Professor Hulisani, UNISA, who highlighted the academic importance of integrating indigenous spiritual knowledge into theological studies and religious practice.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mathole Motshekga, a distinguished parliamentarian and renowned authority on African history. Dr. Motshekga’s speech emphasized the significance of observing and honoring our own spiritual traditions as a way to address contemporary challenges and foster unity across diverse African communities. He called for a renewal of African spirituality to guide the continent towards greater prosperity and social harmony. He urged attendees to view these spiritual teachings not only as part of the past but as a resource for future generations, with the potential to heal, inspire, and guide Africans toward a more spiritually grounded and socially responsible future.

The event, which drew a diverse audience of scholars, spiritual leaders, and government officials, highlighted the growing movement to affirm and revitalize African Indigenous Spirituality as a central pillar of African identity and self-determination. The discussions touched on the necessity of reclaiming African spiritual practices that have been marginalized by colonialism and globalization, with an emphasis on the positive impact these traditions can have on individual and community well-being.

 “This event was a call to action for all Africans to return to their spiritual roots,” said one of the attendees. “It’s time to honor our ancestors and reconnect with the wisdom that has always been a part of our culture. Our spiritual traditions are not relics of the past – they are vital for our future.”

The event closed with a renewed commitment to preserving and promoting African Indigenous Spirituality, as well as fostering collaboration between scholars, religious groups, and cultural organizations to ensure that these teachings are passed down to future generations. Participants left with a deep sense of pride in their heritage and a shared vision for the role of African spirituality in the continued development of the continent.
