The newly approved $51 million rehabilitation of Sarasota’s wastewater facility is bringing renewed attention to aging pipes, pumps and preventive maintenance across the region.
OSPREY, FL — A major wastewater infrastructure project approved in nearby Sarasota is drawing fresh attention to the condition of sewer systems across the area, including the private lines that carry wastewater away from individual homes and businesses.
WWSB reported July 24 that the Sarasota City Commission approved a $51 million rehabilitation of the city’s primary wastewater treatment facility. The project calls for replacement of deteriorating piping and pumps, reconstruction of three clarifiers, addition of a fourth clarifier, modernization of electrical equipment and installation of a new backup generator. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027 and conclude by the end of 2030, according to WWSB.
The project follows a series of wastewater incidents in Sarasota. WWSB reported that Hurricane Debby overwhelmed the city plant in August 2024, resulting in at least 17 million gallons of wastewater entering Sarasota Bay. Ryan Gandy, executive director of the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, told the station that recent infrastructure investments by Sarasota and Sarasota County have been aimed at improving resilience and protecting the bay.
For homeowners in Osprey, the municipal project does not mean residential sewer lines are part of the city rehabilitation. It does, however, put a related issue into the local conversation: the condition of underground drain and sewer piping serving individual properties.

Osprey-area property owners can watch for several signs that warrant closer attention:
- Repeated slow drains or backups in more than one fixture
- Gurgling from toilets or drains when other fixtures are used
- Sewage odors indoors or around the property
- Recurring clogs after prior drain cleaning
- Unexplained wet areas above a buried sewer line
