Reports show that Rugby is the fastest growing sport in the US. There hasn't been a growth of a global sport in the US for decades and this is due to several factors. Rugby is now included in the Olympics since Rio 2016 which had led to a huge increase in interest in Rugby from fans across the world, and more notably by nations such as the US. —
Rugby 7s has been a critical factor in the growth of Rugby in the US. The team won the Las Vegas 7s in 2017 with a sell-out crowd of 80,000 in attendance. Additionally, the USA just won their first-ever game against a tier 1 Rugby nation by beating Scotland in a thrilling 30-29 win in Houston.
The Rugby Calendar doesn't end there for the US, in July they host the 7s Rugby World Cup in San Francisco, a 3-day festival like event which team USA expect to do well. Over 100,000 fans are expected to be drawn to the city.
Companies such as Rugby Warfare are taking notice as they launch their range of unique rugby clothing in the US by setting up a distribution centre in Maryland which will enable the company to ship domestically to US customers instead of the expensive and slow current option of shipping from the UK.
"As specialists in what we do, we've seen this huge demand and growth for everything Rugby in the US since mid-2016" says Scott Flear the CEO of Rugby Warfare.
He adds "Over the years, we've designed and manufactured our own range of athleisure clothing for the Rugby industry as we knew there was a gap for this in the UK and other Rugby nations."
In addition to clothing, Rugby Warfare offers a range of content on how to become a better Rugby player. They encompass the entire Rugby lifestyle by providing clothing, content and an online community.
"We recently did a mini-tour of the USA for market research purposes by meeting with professional players from the newly formed Professional team San Diego Legion. We watched the games as spectators of the newly formed pro league - MLR. We've also been talking to stores, fans, players, coaches and more. It's crystal clear that the USA is ready for a Rugby takeover. We are in prime position to capitalise on this."
Concluded Scott Flear "It's super exciting to see that the US is finally joining the rest of the World in a global sport. They have huge potential to become contenders in the 15s. The sleeping giant as the US is known is truly waking up and we can't wait to see what happens to the sport over the next 5 years. We are super excited to be involved in this growth as it’s a once in a lifetime chance to be involved in a growth of a global sport in a country like the US.”
A report by HSBC states that there will be over 15 million rugby players worldwide within a decade. The report also indicates that Women’s rugby will account for 40% of total players by then. Women’s Rugby is the fastest growing female sport in the World.
Rugby is on the rise. The USA is in prime position to become a dominant Rugby nation within 10-15 years. They face England in the Rugby World Cup next year in Japan. Let's see if they can keep the momentum going.
