In a significant step towards empowering the next generation of community leaders, the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) partnered with the Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VM) to deliver an intensive leadership seminar to over 120 volunteers recently. The seminar took place at SARCS’ National Youth Camp in Hartebeespoort, with volunteers attending from across the country to enhance their skills in leadership, communication, and conflict resolution.
The collaboration between SARCS and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers comes as they were seeking for comprehensive solutions to help their volunteers become more effective leaders. The Tools for Life program, a central element of the training, was seen as the ideal framework to equip volunteers with practical techniques they can apply in their humanitarian work.
The seminar was one of the key highlights of the youth camp, offering dynamic presentations and interactive sessions tailored to address the specific challenges faced by volunteers. The seminar included a variety of activities, from discussing real-life case studies to viewing testimonials of individuals who have benefited from the Tools for Life.
The session focused on how volunteers can use these tools to manage conflicts, lead teams, and improve communication in high-pressure situations, such as during disaster response or community outreach programs. The volunteers were eager to engage, asking inquisitive questions and sharing real-world scenarios they’ve encountered.
“This partnership is essential in developing the leadership skills our volunteers need on the ground. We are confident that this training will significantly enhance their ability to respond to crises effectively,” said one of the coordinators.
The training didn’t stop at the seminar. In a move to ensure the ongoing development of its volunteers, SARCS enrolled all participants in the Scientology VM’s online Tools for Life courses by L. Ron Hubbard. These online programs offer continued learning, allowing volunteers to deepen their understanding of leadership and problem-solving skills.
“The Seminar opened my eyes to new ways of solving problems. I now have tools I can apply immediately when I go back to my community,” said, one of the volunteers attending the seminar.
This collaboration marks the beginning of a growing partnership between SARCS and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers. Both organizations share a commitment to fostering leadership and community service, making the Tools for Life program a natural fit for youth development initiatives.
“We are looking forward to the next camp where volunteers will have a full day to master these vital tools,” said one of the coordinators “The practical drills will ensure that our volunteers are not only educated but fully equipped to handle the real-world challenges they face.”
Volunteers left the seminar motivated and confident in their ability to take what they’ve learned back to their communities. “I can’t wait to use these tools in my community work. The techniques we learned will help us work better as a team and resolve conflicts more quickly,” said one of the volunteers reflecting the overall sentiment among the participants.
This seminar is expected to have a long-term impact on the volunteers, who are frequently on the front lines of humanitarian efforts across South Africa. By building strong leadership and conflict resolution skills, they are investing in the development of volunteers who can navigate the complexities of disaster relief, health campaigns, and community outreach.
“These skills are crucial for our volunteers,” said a coordinator. “Our volunteers will be more confident and effective in the field, which will ultimately benefit the communities we serve.”
About Us: For over 20 years, the Castle Kyalami has been a Midrand landmark. Located atop the highest point in the region, with vistas that stretch for miles, the castle is now home to the Church of Scientology. But once upon a time, it was the personal palace of a Greek architect and his extended family. Today, the Castle Kyalami, which is nationally registered, is a spiritual retreat for Scientologists and includes an expansive state-of-the-art auditorium, a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating for more than 200, a café, a swimming pool and a braai-equipped gazebo. It stands as a home for the community as well as a hub of action for all who share the goal of bettering the lives of individuals and strengthening communities across this region, this nation and all of Africa.
