We cover not only the ‘how’ of using cold wax, but also the ‘why.’ We want to help artists to discover their personal voice with the medium and how to use it in expressive ways for their own ideas.”

“Cold wax is not a new medium, but we have seen a massive revival of its use in the last few years. We have had a great time teaching our own techniques, offering our insights as experienced artists, and learning how others use the medium,” Jerry McLaughlin explains. “With the new membership programs at Cold Wax Academy, we are interacting with artists from around the world as part of our ever-expanding community. Each week we offer live online learning sessions, and we see and respond to paintings posted from around the world. Cold Wax Academy is the only membership program for artists that is devoted exclusively to this medium.”

The instructional live sessions at Cold Wax Academy are organized into academic quarters with a focus on three interrelated topics each quarter. This fall, the topics are Color, Contrast, and the Balance of Spontaneity and Control. Midway through their first quarter, McLaughlin and Crowell report a rapidly growing membership that includes artists from over a dozen countries. While McLaughlin and Crowell are both abstract painters, cold wax medium is suited to other approaches, and they recently featured as a guest artist the figurative painter Melinda Cootsona.

"Our vision for Cold Wax Academy is to be a reliable, comprehensive resource and a refreshing place to discover new techniques for contemporary art," McLaughlin says. “We welcome beginners and more seasoned professionals: those who have never set up their own studios before and those on the hunt for specialized tools and new means of expression. Cold Wax Academy is a place to grow your skills, have your questions answered, and meet other artists.”

To help those who are just getting started with cold wax, or who are looking to expand their options, McLaughlin and Crowell have developed an exclusive Starter Kit that provides everything needed.
