Pureo Launches Food Tracking App Focused on Sugar and Ultra-Processed Foods Instead of Calories

Pureo combines AI-assisted meal analysis with daily food-quality scores to provide a broader view of eating habits.

-- Sober Bar is pleased to announce the launch of Pureo, a food and calorie tracking app designed to help people monitor not only how much they eat, but also the quality and composition of their food choices. Available for iPhone and Android, the app combines conventional calorie and macronutrient tracking with dedicated tools for monitoring sugar and ultra-processed food consumption.

According to the company, for years calorie totals have served as a familiar reference point for people trying to understand their diets. Yet two meals with similar calorie counts may differ considerably in their ingredients, protein content, sugar levels and degree of processing. Pureo was developed around that distinction, giving users a way to consider several aspects of a meal within one mobile app.

Users can photograph their food or describe a meal in text. Pureo then provides an AI-assisted nutritional analysis covering calories, protein and other macronutrients. It also evaluates sugar and ultra-processed food consumption, producing daily scores that allow users to review patterns and follow changes over time.

The approach preserves the practical elements associated with traditional calorie trackers while adding information intended to place those figures in context. Users can track macros, increase their protein intake, support muscle-building plans, work toward weight-related goals or simply develop a clearer picture of their everyday eating habits. At the same time, the app encourages them to look beyond a single calorie number.

“Calorie counting was a revolution in nutrition tracking, but it only tells part of the story,” says Robert Winter, Executive Director of Sober Bar. “A 500-calorie meal made from whole foods and 500 calories of highly processed food should not be treated as identical from a health perspective. Pureo is our attempt to build the next generation of calorie tracker. One that considers what people eat, not only how much.”

Pureo arrives on the market as sugar intake and ultra-processed foods continue to receive attention from researchers and public-health organizations. The World Health Organization recommends that adults and children reduce free-sugar intake to less than 10% of total daily energy intake, with a further reduction below 5% identified as potentially providing additional health benefits.

Research has also examined the relationship between diets high in ultra-processed foods and health. A 2024 umbrella review published in The BMJ analyzed 45 pooled studies involving nearly 10 million participants. It found that greater exposure to ultra-processed foods was associated with a higher risk of several adverse outcomes, particularly those related to cardiometabolic health, common mental disorders and mortality. The researchers also noted differences in the strength and quality of evidence across the outcomes studied.

Pureo is intended to translate this wider discussion into information that can be reviewed meal by meal. Rather than requiring users to interpret calorie, sugar and food-processing data separately, the app brings these measures together and presents them through daily tracking and progress scores.

The result is a broader model of food logging. A person may remain within a daily calorie target while still consuming substantial amounts of sugar or ultra-processed food. By making those patterns more visible, Pureo aims to help users make gradual, informed adjustments instead of treating every calorie as nutritionally equivalent.
