-- Wimbledon is always a highly anticipated fixture in the British sporting summer, and over the years, The Championships have attracted ever larger crowds, with thousands of hopeful spectators queuing for the chance to secure a seat, as the courts reach full capacity throughout.
This year’s event was no different, with total visitors reaching a reported 548,770 – the highest ever since the tournament began back in 1877. Sports commentators are forecasting even greater interest in 2026, the final year before extensive renovations are scheduled to start.
Debenture ticketing provider Wimbledon Debenture Tickets, the number one supplier of guaranteed advance-booked seats, has recommended that anyone wishing to attend Wimbledon 2026 reserve their place as soon as possible, ahead of huge demand.
The Data Behind Growth in Wimbledon Attendance Numbers
Aside from a drop in spectators in 2021, owing to limited seating due to restrictions linked to the pandemic, the volume of people watching Wimbledon live and in person has grown year on year, with 2025 attended by the most people of any tournament in Wimbledon’s 148-year history.
In fact, between 2022 and 2025, the spectating crowds have increased by more than 33,000 people, which demonstrates how the popularity of the tournament has grown. This is partially due to attendees from overseas who book debenture tickets for the assurance of a guaranteed seat, but also to access assistance with organising travel and accommodation.
At any one point, the All England Club has a total capacity of 42,000 spectators, including Ground Pass holders who can watch matches on outdoor courts or broadcast onto the large screens – and until renovations are complete, this capacity isn't expected to increase.
Following 2025’s record-breaking attendance, there is a strong anticipation that debenture tickets will sell out even faster for 2026, with the public ballot receiving unprecedented numbers of applications that far exceeded supply.
An estimated one in ten applicants hoping to secure a ticket through the ballot were successful, meaning that 90% were not, and have the option of buying approved debenture tickets or taking a chance in the queue.
Projected Demand for Wimbledon Tickets for the 2026 Tournament
As we've touched on, the renovations planned will commence once the 2026 Championships conclude. This will involve an upgrade of The Hill to make it more accessible and easier to navigate, alongside adding extra capacity for future tournaments. The new-look Hill is due to be ready for use by 2027 and will be able to accommodate around 20% more people.
Of course, The Hill isn't inside the show courts. It is the area outside, accessible to attendees with Ground Passes who can experience the atmosphere and energy of Wimbledon, but who do not hold tickets for the courts. This means that this phase of Wimbledon’s expansion won't increase capacity in Centre Court or No.1 Court.
The major remodelling will continue beyond 2027, with the final work expected to be completed by 2030. This will include the construction of an additional 39 new courts and a large stadium with seating for 8,000 people, all of which will augment the size of Wimbledon as a venue by three times.
These renovations have meant that many fans, especially those who have attended year on year, are particularly keen to reserve their seating to experience Wimbledon as it currently is for the last time in 2026.
Other reasons behind demand include the world-class tennis stars who have become celebrity sportspeople, with newer players becoming globally recognised names.
There is strong interest from spectators who want to see Grand Slam champions like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz play live, or watch Jack Draper, the British player who is tipped to be a major contender for the Wimbledon title next year.
Reasons to Consider Booking 2026 Wimbledon Debenture Seating Sooner Rather Than Later
In some cases, tennis fans may perceive that leaving their booking until closer to The Championships 2026 will enable them to take advantage of last-minute discounts or spare seats. The reality is that the scale of demand consistently outstrips availability, and unfortunately, this will leave prospective guests disappointed.
As a world-famous sporting spectacle, Wimbledon is organised far in advance, which means that those planning a visit can already review the dates of the tournament, the schedule of play, and which matches are due to take place on each court, while noting that there may be adjustments to exact timings once the event begins.
Packages are available now and are selling quickly, with tennis aficionados aware that reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis, and that debenture tickets are the only way to secure a seat, whereas joining the now-closed ballot or waiting in line is largely a matter of luck.
Last year, organisers also took measures to mitigate safety concerns about the size of the queue and the lengths of time hopeful attendees were spending outside in heatwave conditions. The queue reached full capacity by 7:30 am on the opening day of the tournament, June 30th 2025, and an advisory warning was issued, telling fans not to travel.
This uncertainty, along with the issues caused by fans arriving in the very early hours of the morning, has led more people to reserve seating in advance to ensure they don't experience similar problems next year and aren't left disappointed by having their chances of sitting courtside abandoned.
