-- A career spanning more than three decades in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery has taken Prof. Dr. Şükrü Yazar from medical training in Ankara and Istanbul to specialist institutions in the United Kingdom and Taiwan, combining academic development, international surgical experience and professional leadership.
Today, Şükrü Yazar continues his academic work as a faculty member at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine while practicing plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery in Istanbul.
From Medical Education to International Surgical Training
Prof. Dr. Yazar graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 before completing his residency in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2001.
His specialist development extended beyond Türkiye. During his residency, he received training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury and Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow.
An important early milestone in his academic career came from experimental research conducted during his residency. His work on a reverse-flow musculocutaneous flap, developed as a new flap model, received first prize in the experimental research category of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (TPRECD) research competition in 2001.
The research was subsequently published in Annals of Plastic Surgery, marking an early connection between Prof. Dr. Yazar's clinical training and academic research.
Building Microsurgical Experience in Taiwan
After completing his specialist training, Prof. Dr. Yazar expanded his international experience at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan.
Between 2002 and 2004, he worked there as a Clinical Research Fellow, gaining further experience in reconstructive microsurgery. This period became an important part of a career that would increasingly combine reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, aesthetic surgery, research and medical education.
His international experience also contributed to scientific research in complex reconstructive procedures, including work involving microsurgical reconstruction of the head and neck and reconstruction of composite tissue defects.
Academic Advancement and Professional Certification
Prof. Dr. Yazar's academic career continued with his appointment as associate professor in December 2007. That year, he also received the Turkish Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Board certification.
In 2008, he earned European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS) certification, adding a European professional qualification to his academic and clinical credentials.
He subsequently completed specialty training in Hand Surgery in 2011 and Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2012.
In 2013, he attained the title of professor.
These milestones reflect a professional path extending beyond a single area of plastic surgery and incorporating reconstructive techniques, microsurgery, hand surgery and maxillofacial surgery alongside aesthetic practice.
Academic Leadership at Acıbadem University
Prof. Dr. Yazar has served as a faculty member at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine since 2008. Between 2015 and 2017, he served as Chair of the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Alongside clinical practice, his career has included scientific publications, medical education and participation in national and international professional organizations.
His academic work includes research and publications in areas such as reconstructive microsurgery, head and neck reconstruction and complex tissue reconstruction. His broader scientific record includes national and international articles, book chapters and presentations.
The combination of research, teaching and clinical practice has remained a recurring theme throughout his career.
Leadership in Turkish Plastic Surgery
A further professional milestone came on 26 October 2024, when Prof. Dr. Şükrü Yazar was elected President of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (TPRECD).
The appointment followed years of involvement with the professional organization, adding national professional leadership to a career already encompassing academic medicine, specialist training and international surgical experience.
His professional affiliations also extend internationally through organizations associated with plastic surgery and reconstructive microsurgery.
Three Decades of Academic and Clinical Development
From graduating from medical school in 1992 to becoming a professor, department chair and president of a national professional society, Prof. Dr. Yazar's career reflects more than 30 years of development within plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
International training in the United Kingdom and Taiwan has complemented his academic career in Türkiye, while research, specialist qualifications and medical education have remained integral parts of his professional work.
His current practice encompasses facial, breast and body aesthetics as well as reconstructive surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, with treatment planning tailored to individual patient needs.

Prof. Dr. Şükrü Yazar is a plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon based in Nişantaşı, Istanbul.
