Southwestern College’s President drives social media outreach at the college as well as learning opportunities for students and professionals.

The president of Southwestern College, Dr. Jim Nolan, is an advocate of using social media in higher education. He discusses it in articles on Huffington Post, offers workshops through the college and even blogs about how to utilize specific sites for various purposes. This has led to a vastly increased social media presence for the school, which has in turn driven enrollment to some of the highest in the college’s history.

“We’re reaching out to students, where they are, and on terms they are familiar with,” says Nolan. “We’re also emphasizing that this is something they will need to address as part of their career.”

During Nolan’s tenure, the college has branched out and embraced social media as a tool to introduce the school to potential students, and to keep alumni informed of current events. The bulk of the recruitment efforts are now done through social media, and the school even has a number of graduate students that assist in content creation, curation and engagement.

In addition to utilizing social media to increase the institution’s presence online, Nolan, professors and guests also work to prepare graduates and professionals on how to use social media in their practices as part of the Conscious Entrepreneurship Initiative.

“Social media has created a shift in how humans communicate and discover,” concludes Nolan. “It’s something we, as a college, need to embrace now, and it’s something we need to prepare our students to use in the future.”

Now in its 34th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
