That experience became part of the foundation for his writing. Black’s novels are not always easy to read. His award-winning debut novel, Seizure, introduced Dr. Duncan “Mac” MacGregor, a neurosurgeon whose professional expertise leads to an international crisis. Mac is kidnapped from a neurosurgical conference in Seoul to do complex brain surgery in North Korea, where he faces a difficult choice involving his family, a political leader, and the potential consequences of his actions. The novel establishes several elements that continue throughout the series: gripping storytelling, brain science, international settings, ethical questions, and a protagonist whose professional knowledge carries consequences far beyond the operating room.
Black followed with Death by Denial, a novel centered on the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its human consequences. Mac experiences the virus firsthand while visiting a professor in Wuhan in 2020. When he returns to the United States, he finds resistance and denial instead of coordinated work to defeat the virus. The novel considers how personal experience modifies people’s response to tragedy.
Berserker, the third book in the Mac quartet, turns to the intersection of political unrest and pharmacological influence on human behavior. Mac and his team investigate a plot involving a rediscovered Viking drug and a conspiracy to create disorder. The story moves through multiple locations, including Morocco and Boston, while examining the relationship between scientific knowledge, individual behavior, and social stability.
With another award-winning novel, No Fear, Black extends the series into psychological and medical suspense. This fourth novel centers on an experimental drug developed to treat anxiety that produces profound changes in behavior. Mac is drawn into an investigation spanning China and Istanbul as he seeks to understand the compound and the wider conspiracy surrounding it. The book continues Black’s interest in the point where medical discovery intersects with questions of control, addiction, political power, and human judgment.
“I’ve always been interested in the space where science meets human experience,” Black says. “The physician sees one dimension of a problem, the traveler sees another, and the writer has the opportunity to bring those perspectives together.”
Today, Black divides his time between Boston and London while he continues his work as an author.
