Peau Pendants received a 2026 Global Recognition Award for turning invasive shells removed during coral reef management in Niue into handcrafted jewelry. Sales contribute to Niue Ocean Wide’s conservation program, linking local craft, reef care, and marine protection funding.

-- Peau Pendants has received a 2026 Global Recognition Award for using materials recovered during reef-management work, its handcrafted pendant production, and its financial contributions to marine protection in Niue. Founded by JinNam Hopotoa, the business is the first of its kind; it makes pendants from Drupella shells, marine snails that can put pressure on coral reefs when their numbers increase.

The award recognizes Peau Pendants’ method of using shells collected during reef-care activities rather than discarding them after removal. The primary purpose of removal remains reef health. Of about 15,000 annual entrants, 5.8 percent receive a Global Recognition Award. Peau Pendants was selected for a business approach that combines local craft with defined support for ocean-protection work.

Innovation With A Conservation Purpose

Drupella snails feed on live coral and may damage reef areas when populations become concentrated. Peau Pendants uses shells collected through management activities and does not obtain materials through a separate collection process. Hopotoa shapes each pendant in Niue, retaining its distinct natural features.

“Peau Pendants was born from love for life in the ocean: if we have to remove something from the reef to help protect our corals, how can we give that material another purpose and allow it to continue protecting the ocean and give life back to it?” Hopotoa said. The approach links each item to its source material and the reef-management work behind it. Handcrafting also helps retain the individual character and value of each shell.

Local Craft And Ocean Support

Peau Pendants has reached customers in 18 countries while operating from Niue. The business uses a handcrafted process rather than mass production, which allows each necklace to retain a direct connection to the shell used in its construction and to Niue’s marine environment. The Global Recognition Awards panel assessed the company’s novelty, market potential, response to global challenges, artistic originality, cross-cultural relevance, use of natural materials, and consideration of cultural heritage.

A portion of every necklace sale supports Niue Ocean Wide’s Ocean Conservation Commitments. Under the program, NZD$250 supports protecting one square kilometer of Niue’s ocean for 20 years. The funding intends to assist conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Niue Moana Mahu, the country’s marine protected area, covers 127,000 square kilometers, equivalent to 40 percent of Niue’s exclusive economic zone. “The reason we decided to go with this method of contribution is because of the holistic nature and robust approach of the NOW Trust,” Hopotoa said. “We want to help accelerate action on the ground for our oceans, communities, and future through it.”

Final Words

“Peau Pendants has developed a business model that responds to a local reef-management issue while maintaining a connection to Niue’s ocean,” said Alex Sterling, spokesperson for Global Recognition Awards. “Its handcrafted design, environmental focus, and allocation of part of its sales to marine protection informed the decision to grant Peau Pendants a 2026 Global Recognition Award.”

The Global Recognition Awards panel used the Rasch model to create a linear measurement scale across award categories, enabling comparison among applicants with different types of work. Peau Pendants was recognized for connecting reef care, local knowledge, craft, and support for Niue’s ocean. Each purchase supports a program that helps fund the long-term protection of the country’s marine waters.
