PapersOwl survey of 2,000 Americans aged 18–30 paints a clear picture: young adults experience widespread struggles with financial literacy, housing, and other critical life skills. What’s bad is that it leads to anxiety and uncertainty.
-- A new nationwideWhen does a person truly become an adult?
Is it googling how to unclog a sink at midnight? Or perhaps it’s the moment they buy their first vacuum cleaner? According to a new quiz, neither of these moments signals the true transition into adulthood. The real test comes in mastering the life skills necessary to live independently.
So, the survey reveals a sobering truth: Gen Z is struggling with the most basic life skills that make adulthood manageable. They evidently get lost in financial literacy, housing knowledge, legal basics, and self-sufficiency. Despite a digital fluency that sets them apart, young adults in the U.S. feel anxious about their lack of everyday skills.
Over 80% of Gen Z Feel Anxious About Their Life Skills
The key findings are clear:
- Financial literacy scored the lowest, with only 31% answering correctly.
- Only 20% felt confident in their everyday skills.
- Over 80% of respondents reported feeling anxious due to a lack of practical life skills.
- Google remains the top resource for life skills advice, still outpacing TikTok and ChatGPT.
These results point to a big gap in basic life skills. The only areas where respondents did well were food and nutrition, with 82% correctly identifying dairy products. However, the scores were much lower regarding house maintenance, insurance, and legal knowledge.
Gen Z Needs More Than Academic Credentials to Succeed in Life
Many young adults lack confidence in basic skills, such as budgeting and understanding leases, which leaves them uncertain. Unfortunately, more than half of the respondents reported feeling stressed during the simple quiz.
Ms. Shestakova, Head of Communications at PapersOwl, comments on this:
"This isn't about shaming Gen Z; it's about revealing a real problem backed by numbers. As Gen Z continues to navigate adulthood, they need more than just academic credentials — they need the practical life skills to set them up for success."
It’s Time for 'Adulting 101': Preparing Gen Z for Real-World Challenges
While Gen Z excels in navigating the digital world, these findings suggest many lack the foundational knowledge needed for independent living. The survey experts indicate a significant need for better education in practical areas like money management, housing, and legal literacy. Addressing these gaps, through community programs or self-guided learning, could reduce stress, improve confidence, and prepare young adults for life beyond the classroom.
