On August 27, Olight, a small mobile LED lighting company based in Shenzhen, China, fulfilled its promise to donate its total one-day charity sales to assist first responders in the US, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Italy, Japan, the UK, and China to fight COVID-19. The donations, mostly medical supplies, are funded by a charity sale held by the company on April 10 that raised $785,454. The donated amount for each country is equal to the charity sale total on that day in each country. In fact, they have made $635,125 in donations for the United States alone, which is their biggest market. —
This does not come easy. Since March, the COVID-19 pandemic has grown worldwide, and medical supplies have been in acute shortage. Olight’s procurement team had to work day and night to source medical supplies at a much higher rate than usual. And to top it off, when the first batch of medical supplies arrived at overseas airports such as the US, they were detained at customs due to changes in import policies.
To deliver these lifesaving supplies as soon as possible, Olight decided to allocate extra funds to purchase the same quantity of medical supplies that comply with these new policies. The new medical supplies finally made it to frontline workers in time. On August 27, their latest donation of $15,905 was made to the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation, which was a great ending to such a large endeavor.
Why did Olight make donations despite being hit by the pandemic? Let’s listen to what their CEO Fox Fan has to say.
“We have been producing high-end handheld flashlights, rail-mounted lights, and headlamps to keep people safe and facilitate their work for the past 13 years. But what’s the use of our products when people are suffering from this terrible pandemic? Our motto is to “illuminate the world” and for now the best way to do so is to provide medical supplies to hospitals, organizations and families.”
