-- Kuala Lumpur shuttler Nur Eryna Izzati Muhammad Haizad’s dominant performance at the Allianz Junior Badminton Championship (AJBC) Qualifying Round 10 in Penang recently has earned her a precious slot in the AJBC Grand Finals in early December.

The 13-year-old from SMJK Chong Hwa, Kuala Lumpur, who bagged the Girls’ Under-13 Singles title and took the silver in the Girls’ Under-13 Doubles event, is especially thrilled at the prospect of making her AJBC Grand Finals debut.

“I think I felt the pressure of wanting to win both the singles and doubles. But what’s really important is that we made the Grand Finals, which was our target all along,” said an elated Nur Eryna.

“We will have a month to improve before the Grand Finals. I need to work more on my footwork and speed, as these were lacking in my doubles game. It will not be easy to play in two events at the Grand Finals as there will be a lot of good players there. My target remains the same and that’s to win the title for both, if possible.”

Nur Eryna Izzati defeated Lim Yan Xi of SJKC Kim Sen, Pulau Pinang 15-9, 15-10 in the Girls’ Under-13 Singles final. She then joined forces with partner Foo Nai Wen from SMK Segambut, Kuala Lumpur in the Girls’ Under-13 Doubles final against Eugine Lim of SMK St Mark, Pulau Pinang and Lim Yan Xi from SJKC Kim Sen, Pulau Pinang, where they lost 11-15, 15-12, 15-10.

In the meantime, Tan Ee Jay of SMJK Jit Sin, Pulau Pinang will also be looking to improve ahead of the Grand Finals. He made the cut as the runner-up in both the Boys’ Under-15 Singles and Doubles for a second AJBC Grand Finals appearance.

Ee Jay played a three-set thriller against Yeoh Zhen Hong from Regent International School, Kedah for the Boys’ Under-15 Singles title, eventually conceding 10-15, 16-14, 13-15.

In the Doubles final, Ee Jay with partnerCavan Tan Kai En of SMK Chung Ling, Pulau Pinang fell 10-15, 7-15 to Dani Syafi Bin Zaidi and Putra Assolihin Bin Mohamad Hamim from Maahad Integrasi Madad, Kedah.

Ee Jay previously made it to the AJBC Grand Finals in 2024, where he reached the Boys’ Under-13 Singles quarterfinals and featured in the group stage of the Boys’ Under-13 Doubles competition.

“I feel unhappy at losing in two finals – it was close,” said Ee Jay, who is determined to make up for it at the AJBC Grand Finals this year. “I will work on elevating my stamina and power to improve my smashes.”

The fifth edition of the AJBC is organised by Allianz Malaysia Berhad and supported by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the Sports, Co-curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of Education.

In just five years, the AJBC, which does not require any entrance fees from the players, is among the most popular and anticipated junior events in the country. This year’s AJBC features a total of 10 Qualifying Rounds followed by the Grand Finals in Kuala Lumpur.
