The residents of New York typically love the hustle and bustle of the city and the easy access they have to any number of stores, restaurants, and community activities. Perhaps Robert De Niro described it best when he said “There’s no place like New York. It’s the most exciting city in the world now. That’s the way it is. That’s it.”
But all of the excitement and fun comes at a price, one that thousands of New Yorkers pay every day when they find themselves the victim of an accident.
In a city that is full of moving vehicles, it’s very easy to become injured. Nearly 200,000 people are injured in a car accident in the city every year and the injuries they sustain can be life-changing, career-ending, or even fatal. The same goes for accidents on construction sites which frequently involve scaffolding that doesn’t meet OSHA safety standards or ladder falls. Those aren’t the only ways to become injured – others are the victims of a defective product that malfunctioned or medical malpractice.
What can be even more shocking is that the different types of insurance which are in place to assist these victims often isn’t enough to compensate them for all of their losses, which is why many find themselves deep in debt due to medical bills. So it’s hardly surprising that with the number of accidents on the rise, so too are the number of personal injury lawsuits.
By filing a lawsuit, the plaintiff hopes to regain not only the money they have spent on medical expenses but also compensation for lost earnings, physical pain and suffering, and emotional trauma. For some, compensation is achieved through a settlement after their legal team negotiates with the defendant. Others go to trial and present their argument in front of a judge and jury. Many plaintiffs have reported that not only did this help to keep them financially safe but it also gave them a sense that justice had been served.
