New student housing breaks ground at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke

The 120 units will deliver affordable state-of-the-art housing and are due for completion in 2021.

Tuesday, 27th October. Grapevine, Tx: Last week, the Wafflemat foundation-forming system was installed in the first of 10 buildings to be used for housing at the University of North Carolina Pembroke.

When completed, 120 units will provide over 200,000 sf of new residences for on-campus students. It also means Wafflemat is now installed to support structures built on expansive, rocky, compressible, or collapsible soils from the west coast to the east coast, and from Texas to the Dakotas, giving new relevance to the usage of “over 25,000,000 sf of Wafflemat installed across the USA.”

UNC Pembroke is rapidly expanding and projects include the state-of-the-art Thomas School of Business that will complement the renowned Thomas Entrepreneurship Hub. The University looks forward to the addition of new on-campus housing for its growing resident student population. Brick finishes will accentuate the handsome architecture and are a perfect fit to the existing campus structures.

“Wafflemat was chosen for the project, because it delivered significant savings in building cycle-time meaning the slab took
four days from formboards to concrete pour, as well as the ability to be constructed in any weather condition. This was a
key consideration in North Carolina building, because alternative slabs can take as long as a month in the wet season. I
recommended Wafflemat because of the sandy conditions in the area, and the difficulty in construction they would bring.”
– Steve Folk, VP of Foremost Foundations and Construction.

The Wafflemat also offered substantial environmental advantages versus alternative slabs. Not only are the Waffleboxes (void forms providing relief to heaving soils) used in the foundation made of recycled polypropylene plastic, but they also void concrete which is the single biggest producer of CO2 in all construction.

The UNC Pembroke project provides another opportunity for Wafflemat to not only deliver the benefits detailed above, but also much-needed housing students will enjoy for generations.
