-- Sardinian writer and food photographer, Jennifer Cauli, has recently published The Sardinia Blue Zone Cookbook, which shares 41 authentic Sardinian recipes rooted in the Mediterranean diet, longevity traditions, and everyday island life.

As the only cookbook about the area written in English by a native, The Sardinia Blue Zone Cookbook stays true to Sardinian cuisine, featuring only traditional recipes and ingredients. With worldwide attention on the people of Sardinia, some of the longest living people, with even specific villages noted for their high populations of people living to over 100, the new book aims to capture the culture behind a Mediterranean longevity diet.

Author Jennifer Cauli researched deeply into the Mediterranean diet, with recipes gathered via firsthand interviews with centenarians, families, and local tourism boards. The project began after she won a CREI contest supporting Sardinians abroad, conducting interviews with centenarians and locals, often in their native language. Approaching locals in the recognised language of Sardinia allowed her to focus deeply on Blue Zone regions like Ogliastra and Barbagia.

The book covers an extensive range of authentic local recipes, including Malloreddus (Sardinian gnocchetti), Culurgiones (Sardinian filled pasta), Pane Carasau (music bread), hearty minestrone, and other everyday staples.

However, alongside paying tribute to the real cuisine of her homeland, Jennifer's focus was also on busting some of the myths associated with the region. In her book, she states that longevity in Sardinia grew from simple, seasonal food: bread, pecorino cheese, pork fat, olive oil, vegetables, legumes, and wine in moderation. Rather than a calorie-obsessed plan, balance, community, and tradition are the focus.

“The oldest Sardinians thrived on humble staples — not restrictive diets,” says Jennifer Cauli. “I grew up believing that fats, carbs, sweets, and wine were to be avoided. Yet, these were at the core of the meals I knew from my childhood in Sardinia. You won’t find an elixir of life, but you’ll find stories, recipes, and a real taste of Sardinia.”
