At the same time, there are a couple of scams which are already associated with the new cards.The new cards will not show the Social Security number as the current cards do. This has been a severe national problem for Medicare enrollees who have had their card compromised by identity thieves. The new cards will have an encrypted 11 digit number, which even the holder will not be able to "unencrypt." These are positive changes which will improve the safety and security of the cardholders.
Scammers have already found two relatively new approaches to compromise the security of the cards. Identify thieves call Medicare recipients, and tell them that the new cards are coming out, but there is a cost of $30 to $50 to obtain the cards. This is a false statement, as there is no charge for the replacement card. Further, CMS/Medicare only uses the U.S. Postal Service to communicate with recipients. The second technique is for the thief to say that they have a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan available, but then request personal Medicare information so that the new plan can be utilized. This is also bogus.
