Medical Benefits Of Massage Proven Again

The Even Keel Day Spa explains the medical benefits of massages.

Researchers at the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle, Washington, found that for some problems like low back pain, a massage is a better treatment than things like chiropractic therapy and acupuncture.

CNN’s Health Magazine reported on the health benefits of massage and interviewed health care experts from around the country. Among them is Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., director of the Cardiovascular Institute at New York Presbyterian Hospital--Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Oz said all surgery patients at the hospital are offered a post-operation massage. That massage has health benefits is not that much of a surprise to Even Keel Spa in Annapolis.

“The staff has seen people come in with pain and soreness and leave with a spring in their step,” said Steven Gordon, a spokesman for Blulo, the company which handles Even Keel’s public relations. “Massage is often recommended for pregnant women too. It helps ease the stress and tension the pregnancy creates in a woman.”

That too is backed up by medical evidence. Tiffany Field, Ph.D., director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine said she has ladies with labor pain get relief from massage.

The Annapolis Day spa offers several types of massage with three aimed specifically at pregnant women. Two are Thai-based and one of these incorporates yoga. The other is one-hour massage with pillows to make sure the mom-to-be stays comfortable.

In her work Dr. Field said she’s also seen people suffering from other pain-causing ailments find relief through massage. “Massage loosens ‘knotted’ muscles and relieves stress. When the stress goes, there’s just bound to be additional benefits which come from the massage,” Mr. Gordon said. “Massage is good for easing headaches too.”

The Annapolis spa offers 10 different massages, including the pregnancy ones and several signature massages. Massage times range from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the massage and the customer’s requests.

Even Keel’s mission is to “listen intently, treat holistically and care for customers with competence, compassion, and a sense of joy,” Mr. Gordon said. Even Keel continues be a top Annapolis spa because the staff treats every customer each client as a unique person, he said.
