Mallakhamb

Mallakhamb is a sport that improves strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and posture. It also enhances mental focus and concentration. There are three popular versions of

 • Pole Mallakhamb: The gymnast performs on a smooth wooden pole that is 2.6 meters high and 55 cm in circumference at the base. The pole is fixed in the ground and polished with castor oil to reduce friction.

 • Hanging Mallakhamb: The gymnast performs on a shorter wooden pole that is suspended by a hook and chain, leaving a gap of 20 cm between the ground and the base of the pole. The pole can swing and spin, adding to the difficulty and thrill of the performance.

 • Rope Mallakhamb: The gymnast performs on a cotton rope that is hung from support. The rope is about 2.5 cm in diameter and has a knot at the lower end for grip. The gymnast uses various parts of the body to hold the rope while performing various poses.

Indian Exercises for Strength

Besides Mallakhamb, there are other ancient Indian exercises that can help in building strength. Some of them are:

 • Gada (mace or swing): A gada is a heavy mace that consists of a wooden handle with a metal or stone head at one end. The gada is swung behind the back in circular motions, working the shoulders, chest, back, forearms, and fingers. The gada was used as a weapon by Hindu warriors and is also associated with the Hindu deity Hanuman.

 • Jori (club swing): A jori is a pair of wooden clubs that are swung in various patterns around the head and body. The jori works the same muscles as the gada but also improves coordination and agility. The Jori was also used as a weapon by Hindu warriors.

 • Dand (Indian push-up): A dand is a variation of a push-up that involves moving from a downward dog position to an upward dog position and back again. The band works the chest, shoulders, triceps, core, and legs.

 • Bethak (Indian squat): A bethak is a variation of a squat that involves sweeping the arms out in front of the chest and raising the heels off the ground while lowering the hips towards the floor. The bethak works the glutes, hip flexors, quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves.
