Major Regeneration of Woking in Surrey Transforms Town Centre

Recent regeneration of Woking town centre has included a new look for Victoria Square and restoration of The Lightbox building, a gallery museum in the heart of the town.

Woking town centre has been undergoing some significant changes to regenerate the area. Two recent projects include the regeneration of Victoria Square and the cleaning and restoration of cultural hub The Lightbox.

The Victoria Square development is projected to be completed in 2020, with the multi-million pound project being steered by Sir Robert McAlpine. The new development includes two residential towers, which are 34 and 32 storeys high, as well as an additional third tower, which will be home to a new hotel. The apartment buildings will offer 400 new homes built to a high specification and including full concierge facilities and an amenity space for residents.

The new hotel will be a flagship Hilton Hotel with 189 rooms, including senior and junior suites. It will feature a lobby bar, all-day dining restaurant, conference facilities, sky bar and an on-site cafe.

The new development will also feature 125,000 sq ft of commercial space, including a new Marks and Spencer, a medical centre, a multi-storey car park and two public plazas. The demolition and reconstruction of the Shoppers' Red car park has also been planned, providing an additional 740 parking spaces when combined with the new car park.

The other major project in the town centre is the restoration of The Lightbox, a gallery and museum. See Brilliance, a commercial restorative cleaning specialist from Newbury, Berkshire, has carried out this project to help restore the building's exterior.

Nigel Bennett, Technical Director at See Brilliance, said of the project:

“We worked with Woking Borough Council to conduct restorative cleaning works on The Lightbox building, a stunning cultural centre in the heart of Woking. The project involved our operatives abseiling to specific areas of the building’s exterior to treat and restore the anodised shingles.

"Using specialist products and restorative techniques, we were able to restore the shingles back to approximately 90% of their original appearance. It was an exciting project for us, mostly because of the beauty of the contemporary building which was designed by the architects responsible for the London Eye.”

Both of these regeneration projects are helping to transform Woking town centre. New homes and new businesses help the town to look to the future and remain a forward-thinking location that has plenty to offer both residents and visitors. The Victoria Square development is on track to be completed next year and will be a significant contribution to the future of Woking.
