According to Illman, one of the more common questions she receives is how she structures her working relationship with clients. Her answer, she said, is that there is no single method.
"People often assume I have one preferred way of working, but that isn't the case," said Illman. "Some clients are extremely busy and simply want me to interpret the space on my own. Others want to be involved every step of the way and check in on the progress daily. Both approaches work equally well for me."
For clients who prefer a more hands-off approach, Illman said she is frequently given open creative latitude, sometimes summarized by clients as an invitation to "do whatever the spirit moves you to do." In those cases, she takes time to consider the space before returning with a concept on an agreed timeline. Other clients arrive with a curated collection of reference images, and Illman's task becomes composing a single cohesive design that reflects everything they have gathered.
Residential and Commercial Applications
Magic Wand Murals has completed commissions in private homes as well as commercial interiors, with projects spanning entryways, dining rooms, stairwells, and dedicated feature walls, among other spaces. Commercial clients have engaged Illman for lobbies and interior spaces where a distinctive visual identity is a priority.
"Every space tells me something before I even pick up a brush," Illman said. "My job is to listen to that first, and then figure out how to translate it into something permanent."

Illman noted that interest in commissioned murals and mosaics has increased in recent years as more clients seek artwork that reflects their own homes and histories rather than reproductions or off-the-shelf pieces. She attributed part of this shift to a broader appreciation for handcrafted, personalized design within both residential and commercial interiors.
