This year’s Northwest Indiana giveaway will take place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Portage Police Department (6260 Central Avenue, Portage, IN 46368). To help students start the school year off right, 1,000 FREE backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 9:00 a.m. while supplies last. Students must be present to receive a backpack.
To make the day even more special for students and their families, this outdoor event will feature fun activities, complimentary snacks, and Lerner and Rowe swag for attendees while supplies last. In partnership with the Portage Police Department and Portage Fire Department, attendees will also get an up-close look at a fire engine and police vehicles, meet K-9 officers, and interact with first responders from both departments. Community resource vendors will also be on site.
For everyone’s safety, families are kindly asked to be mindful of pedestrians and other vehicles when entering and exiting the area. Parking is available in the surrounding business plazas and north of the event at Founder’s Square Park.
The need in Portage is real. Portage Township Schools is among the Indiana districts that qualify for the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision, a designation that reflects significant economic need across the community and makes all enrolled students eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
That context matters when you consider that the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimated that families spent an average of $858 per child on back-to-school essentials for the 2025 – 2026 school year. For parents already managing on a tight budget, a free backpack filled with supplies is not a small gesture, it is a meaningful head start.

For 2026, Lerner and Rowe will distribute 6,250 total backpacks filled with school supplies in seven cities and four states across the United States, including Albuquerque, Phoenix (Mesa and Glendale), Yuma, Tucson, North Las Vegas, and Portage. Portage serves as the final stop on this year’s tour.
