Harriet Tubman is an American icon and her actions have inspired generations of people to aspire to greatness. In commemoration of the 100th year of Harriet’s passing, Karen Jones Meadows, actress and playwright of the critically acclaimed and award-winning production, HARRIET’S RETURN, created an International Day of Theatre Honoring Harriet Tubman, which featured simultaneous readings of the play worldwide. Due to the positive reception, and to properly close the anniversary year, Ms. Meadows has announced that the event will be repeated in March of 2014. She encourages new and existing participants to perform readings of the play as a tribute to the woman who led thousands along the Underground Railroad. Chronicling the life of famed Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman, HARRIET’S RETURN is an award-winning theatrical production. It is an experience that takes the audience through the more than nine-decade life of the heroine, and portrays more than 30 other characters, all with a single actress. It is a powerful piece that explores the iconic Tubman, the psyche of the nation, and is a call to action for those who witness it.
“The play I am doing right now is exactly the play I want — this version, these words — I'm happy and apparently the audiences are, too,” said playwright, actress and intuitive medium Karen Jones Meadows about HARRIET’S RETURN.
HARRIET’S RETURN is also listed as a member of The National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network To Freedom Program; which promotes programs and partnerships to commemorate, preserve sites, and educate the public about the historical significance of the Underground Railroad.
“Harriet Tubman fascinates people. They never tire of her. She is an icon and spiritual leader for people throughout the world. She inspires people in moments of desperation to muster courage."
