Guiding Pet Owners Through the “Martial Art” of Dog Training
K9 Karate Dog Training, inspired by the structured, disciplined mindset of the martial arts, is transforming dog training by involving pet owners in each step. Based on the principle that calm and consistent leadership produces lasting behavioral results, K9 Karate teaches owners how to take an active role in their dog’s training. Just as karate students advance through belt levels, dogs at K9 Karate earn collars as they master basic to advanced behaviors. This structured, goal-oriented approach not only rewards dogs for progress but fosters a collaborative bond between pets and owners.
At the heart of K9 Karate Dog Training’s philosophy is the belief that effective training empowers owners as leaders, helping them guide their dogs with clarity and control through real-world scenarios. Erick, the founder and a certified trainer, has trained and mentored under some of the industry's most respected figures, including Jas Leverette, star of Canine Intervention on Netflix. Erick’s mission centers on empowering owners to lead their pets with calm, consistent, and kind authority, allowing both dogs and owners to live their best lives together.
K9 Karate Dog Training was Born Because of a Reactive Dog
The story behind K9 Karate Dog Training is deeply rooted in Erick’s experience with his reactive dog, Moose. After hiring trainers to help Moose with his reactivity, Erick decided to pursue dog training himself to help other owners and their dogs.
Certified by Conifer Canine’s Dog Trainer College, Will Atherton, one of the world’s most popular canine behaviorists, and training from other industry leaders such as Michael Ellis, and Richard Heinz, the Miami Dog Whisperer, among others, Erick’s qualifications are backed by a comprehensive background in canine training education, including K9 First Aid, and CPR. Erick is also a retired police officer. Erick and his wife have owned a martial arts academy for almost 18 years. Erick is a lifelong martial artist for over 46 years. Erick’s martial arts background is what inspired the name K9 Karate Dog Training.
Before becoming a dog trainer, Erick and his wife also trained their Miniature Dachshund, Jelli, who went on to earn several first-place titles in races at events including Oakland Raiders games. Jelli’s achievements highlight Erick’s commitment to high-level training and consistency, and in 2006, she was featured on ESPN, placing second out of 156 dogs at the Golden Gate Fields Wiener Nationals.
This dedication to excellence in training and sportsmanship set the foundation for Erick’s career, and his ongoing mentorship by dog training veterans with over 25 years of experience drives his commitment to lifelong learning in the field. These seasoned mentors continue to influence the training techniques he passes on to his clients, distinguishing K9 Karate Dog Training as a leader in owner-focused dog training.
Training Techniques Designed to Build Trust and Real-World Reliability
K9 Karate Dog Training uses methods that promote real-world reliability. Unlike traditional obedience training, which often focuses solely on responses to commands, K9 Karate emphasizes a training style that encourages dogs to make good decisions independently. This choice-based approach aims to create dogs that are calm and well-behaved, even in unpredictable environments.
K9 Karate’s philosophy is rooted in Erick’s belief that empowering owners with training skills and leadership abilities promotes mutual trust between owners and dogs. Clients learn to lead their pets effectively, helping their dogs stay calm and controlled around various distractions. This owner-led training model emphasizes relationship-building techniques that result in confident, well-mannered dogs who are eager to obey their owners’ cues.
Structured for Success: The Unique “Colored Collar” Reward System
Inspired by the martial arts belt system, K9 Karate’s colored collar system is designed to mark a dog’s progress through different levels of behavioral mastery. Starting from basic obedience and progressing to advanced control and trust-building, each colored collar earned represents a new level of skill for the dog and owner alike. This clear, reward-based system helps clients track their progress, encouraging consistency in the training process.
By visually recognizing each stage of improvement, the colored collar system serves as a motivational tool for both dogs and owners. This structure mirrors Erick’s core belief that discipline, combined with consistent practice, helps dog owners become confident leaders and achieve lasting results in behavior management.
A Community of Lifelong Learners and Leaders
K9 Karate Dog Training is committed to continuous education, both for Erick and his clients. Erick believes in the Japanese concept of “Kaizen, “ which means continuous improvement. Erick’s participation in industry organizations such as the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP) keeps him informed about the latest training methods and techniques. This commitment ensures that K9 Karate’s clients benefit from Erick’s evolving expertise, including best practices for handling and training in the safest, most effective ways.
K9 Karate’s clients experience firsthand the transformative power of structured training and are encouraged to maintain leadership habits that strengthen the bond between themselves and their dogs.
