-- This week, the Jason Kulpa Entrepreneur Scholarship announced its 2nd annual scholarship recipient, Rachel Dovsky of University of California San Diego. Ms. Dovsky, a junior, is majoring in cognitive science with a specialization in design and interaction. She changed her major from music to cognitive science when she transferred to UCSD from a community college. However, she notes in her essay that music will still play a strong role in a future entrepreneurial career, writing that she hopes to integrate auditory design factors into her career in the cognitive sciences. Regarding the potential jobs in cognitive science, Ms. Dovsky further notes “The opportunities are as wide as my imagination. My chosen profession will have a great impact on the technological world we live in, and with my specialized skill set, I will be poised to make a valuable contribution.”
Open to graduating seniors and current college students, the Jason Kulpa Entrepreneur Scholarship is a yearly award given to the candidate with the best essay describing his or her interests in launching and growing small businesses. The scholarship is intended to recognize students with an entrepreneurial spirit: “As an entrepreneur,” Mr. Kulpa notes in an interview, “you have much more freedom to create a culture that is indicative of your location, employees, and company.”
The scholarship is the brainchild of Mr. Kulpa, who founded UE.co (formerly Underground Elephant) in 2008 as a way to reimagine digital marketing platforms and customer acquisitions software. Named one of San Diego’s “Best Place to Work” by San Diego Business Journal in 2018, the company emphasizes a culture of giving back to the community. Mr. Kulpa also sponsors other university scholarships that address a number of local needs and make education more accessible to a range of ambitious and deserving students.
