The tool addresses requirements for identifying and securing personally identifiable information (PII) in structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data sources.

-- IRI, a provider of data processing and protection software, has announced the availability of IRI DarkShield. The software enables the classification, search, and masking of sensitive data across a range of file formats and databases, responding to ongoing data privacy and compliance challenges in modern organizations.

One of the primary capabilities of IRI DarkShield lies in its ability to conduct data discovery and data masking in diverse environments. The tool supports deterministic and pseudonymization techniques and allows users to define custom data classes and search criteria. Named Entity Recognition (NER), pattern-based, and lookup-based methods are included to identify and remediate PII in local and cloud-based files, relational databases, and NoSQL repositories.

The software operates within the broader IRI Workbench environment, built on Eclipse, where data class definitions, job specifications, and masking operations can be executed through graphical or programmatic interfaces. The results of discovery and masking activities are saved in self-documenting scripts, providing an audit trail aligned with data governance requirements.

“DarkShield addresses the increasing demand for visibility and control over sensitive data outside traditional structured systems,” said a spokesperson for IRI. “The DarkShield software incorporates multiple discovery methods and masking options to support regulatory compliance and internal data policies.”

Support is included for file formats such as text, Excel, PDF, image files, and documents stored in network folders or cloud services. Databases supported include both structured systems (via JDBC) and NoSQL platforms such as MongoDB and Cassandra. Search operations can be filtered and combined with remediation routines in a single pass or executed separately for analysis and reporting.

Data protection remains a significant concern as organizations manage large volumes of both structured and unstructured content. IRI DarkShield provides options for processing dark data by integrating multiple search and classification tools with flexible deployment. The tool allows for local or remote execution and includes logging features that can be exported for visualization in third-party Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platforms such as Splunk and Datadog.

In addition to masking capabilities, the software enables the creation of audit-ready logs and structured output files that may be used to fulfill obligations related to data portability, erasure, or rectification, as outlined in regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
