RowGen, a long-established test data generator, enables users to design referentially correct test datasets using only metadata such as DDL or layout definitions. This ensures structural and business-rule consistency across database tables, files, and reports. According to IRI Senior Developer James Ma, “RowGen supports both random and seeded value creation across more than 100 data types. This means teams can simulate enterprise-wide test conditions using intelligent mock data, without copying or risking production assets.”
IRI’s updated data synthesis tool is particularly useful for simulating production database environments for stress testing, application prototyping, or data vault modeling. In addition to RDBMS targets like Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, and Teradata, RowGen can also populate files in JSON, XML, Excel, COBOL, HL7, fixed-width text, and even image formats using structured overlays.
For development scenarios that require real data, Voracity’s integration with the IRI FieldShield, CellShield, and DarkShield masking engines enables privacy-preserving transformation of production datasets. These tools support the static de-identification of sensitive fields using encryption, pseudonymization, redaction, and other compliant techniques. They can be applied selectively, in combination with RowGen, to generate hybrid test environments that include both anonymized real values and synthesized test data.
Importantly, these workflows are managed through the IRI Workbench, an Eclipse-based GUI that supports shared metadata, version control, and automation. IRI’s tools also support DevOps pipelines and virtualization workflows, ensuring seamless integration with modern software delivery processes. The combination of RowGen’s smart database test data capabilities and Voracity’s unified platform approach provides users with the flexibility to work with either synthetic or masked data — or both — depending on privacy requirements and system architecture.
