Initiative Planned to Inspire Future High-Tech Entrepreneurs from North England Universities

Dr. Eric Balki’s TriPyramid Ventures is launching an initiative to inspire future high-tech entrepreneurs from North English universities, helping close the UK’s technology gap via a 2026 innovation hackathon and think tank focused on AI, healthcare, and future energy leadership.

-- Dr. Eric Balki, CEO of TriPyramid, has set down an initiative to work with universities in the North of England to help their graduating students head toward entrepreneurship and solve some of the most challenging technology problems that will form the basis of a new future techno-economic order. The initiative aims to identify and empower the next generation of graduate and postgraduate talent to tackle a looming crisis: the widening technological gap between the UK and the "Superpower Duopoly" of the United States and China.

Dr. Balki’s initiative is driven by alarming data indicating that, without coherent planning, especially at the Government level, the UK is on a trajectory to become a technological "client state" importing technological intelligence and infrastructure rather than creating it. This is despite the UK having pioneered many of the fields at play today, including AI.

Recent analysis completed by Dr. Balki’s team reveals a critical decoupling:

  • The Infrastructure Gap: While the US added 5.8 GW of data center capacity in 2024 to power the AI revolution, the UK added just 0.2 GW, a staggering 29x growth differential. This is despite the UK having a greater population density.
  • The Investment Chasm: Private AI investment in the US is approaching $470 billion, dwarfing the UK’s approximate $28 billion.
  • The Energy Paralysis: Industrial electricity costs in the UK remain nearly 3x higher than in the US and China, making the domestic training of large-scale AI models economically challenging in the future.

"From our analysis, the numbers look worrying," said Dr. Eric Balki. "We are currently over-focusing on tightening regulatory frameworks and even more complex taxation regimes, while the US and China are building massive engines of growth. If this trend continues, by 2030 the UK will face a 'Brain Drain' of its top talent to foreign ecosystems, and we risk losing £150 billion in potential GDP growth by failing to transition from an adopter to a creator economy."

To reverse this trend, Dr. Balki’s initiative focuses on three pillars:

  • Data Infrastructure: Helping ease reliance on foreign cloud infrastructure and satellite networks.
  • Agentic Research, especially in Healthcare: Working on autonomous agents that can physically revolutionize industrial and medical workflows and solve the ageing population problem.
  • Future Energy Resources: Finding new solutions to drastically cut electricity costs, the root bottleneck of the UK’s computing capacity.

The Hackathon & Think Tank

To kickstart this movement, TriPyramid and industrial partners will fund a 3-Day Innovation Hackathon in July of 2026. This event is designed as a launchpad for tangible outcomes, offering successful teams research grants, funding, and a pathway to startup activity. Early discussions are currently underway with the University of Leeds to serve as the host venue for this inaugural event. The event will be judged by a panel of experts who will evolve into a High-Tech Think Tank for the North East. This body will advise the Government on policy to ensure the UK does not fall out of the advanced economy technological tier.

"The talent in the North of England is exceptional, but it requires the physical infrastructure to thrive," Dr. Balki added. "We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines while the future is built thousands of miles away. We must do something to build it here. This initiative is not going to solve the problems we face, which are gargantuan, but it may help policy makers refocus on the areas that will matter most in the next 20 years."

Further details regarding application dates and specific tracks will be released in the coming months.
