Hoomanities, a nonprofit leveraging sports diplomacy through wrestling, has launched expanded cross-cultural exchange initiatives in the Middle East and Central Asia, building on nearly two decades of work to foster dialogue between the United States and Iran.

-- Hoomanities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through sports diplomacy, has announced the expansion of its international exchange programs, with a continued focus on building bridges between the United States and Iran. Since its founding by Hooman Tavakolian, a former NCAA Division I wrestler and U.S. State Department collaborator, the organization has used wrestling as a vehicle for cultural dialogue and grassroots diplomacy in some of the world's most geopolitically sensitive regions.

The organization's expanded programming builds on a record of tangible initiatives that include the organization of the 2017 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling in Kermanshah, Iran, held during a period of heightened U.S.-Iran tensions and travel restrictions, and the rebuilding of the Maiwand Wrestling Club in Kabul, Afghanistan, following its destruction in 2018.

Hooman D. Tavakolian, Founder of Hoomanities, has noted that athletes serve as true ambassadors of peace, and that the mutual respect fostered through sport forms the foundation of every diplomatic relationship the organization has helped build. Wrestling is deeply embedded in the cultural identity of both the United States and Iran, and that shared heritage creates an opening that formal political channels often cannot replicate.

Wrestling holds singular significance in Iran, where it is recognized as the national sport and has historically served as a source of national pride and cross-cultural camaraderie. The first time a U.S. wrestling team visited Iran was in 1998. Tavakolian's diplomacy efforts brought the two countries back to the mat in 2017, when the Iran Wrestling Federation agreed to allow the U.S. team to compete at the World Cup in Kermanshah. Iranian crowds chanting the names of U.S. competitors became a widely noted moment of grassroots goodwill, demonstrating that citizen-level engagement can flourish even when government-level relations are strained.

Beyond athletic exchange, Hoomanities has invested directly in underserved communities. The organization helped construct three schools for girls in minority Sunni communities located near Iran's borders with Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan, in provinces such as Sistan and Baluchestan, where access to education remains limited. These community investments reflect the organization's belief that lasting diplomatic progress requires engagement at the ground level, not just at the negotiating table.

The work of Hoomanities aligns with a growing body of evidence supporting people-to-people diplomacy as a complement to formal policy engagement. The U.S. State Department's sports diplomacy programs, with which Tavakolian has collaborated, have engaged more than 100 countries and territories since their inception, and sports have increasingly been recognized in the foreign policy literature as an effective tool for reducing hostility and building long-term trust between nations in conflict or tension.

As Hoomanities expands its international programming, the organization continues to demonstrate that sustained, ground-level engagement, through sport, education, and community investment, can open channels of understanding that formal diplomacy alone cannot. With active exchanges across the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond, the nonprofit remains focused on deepening its work in regions where cross-cultural connections are needed most.
