The Sammartino family will auction Bruno and Carol Sammartino’s longtime Pittsburgh home and treasured memorabilia, including Bruno’s Hall of Fame ring, gym equipment, awards, and personal artifacts, giving fans worldwide a rare opportunity to own pieces of the late wrestling legend’s historic legacy.

-- For more than half a century, the modest Pittsburgh home of Bruno and Carol Sammartino stood as a testament to hard work, deep family values, and unmatched athletic history. Following the passing of Carol Sammartino— beloved wife of the late, legendary multi-time WWWF Heavyweight Champion—the Sammartino family has made the decision to bring their lifelong estate to public auction. This includes not only the iconic family home they have shared since the 1960s, but also an extraordinary, deeply personal collection of Bruno’s memorabilia, including his historic Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame ring, his personal home gym equipment, and countless career plaques and prestigious awards.

The Man Behind the Legend

Born on October 6, 1935, in the small village of Pizzoferrato in Abruzzo, Italy, Bruno Leopoldo Francesco Sammartino’s story is one of extraordinary resilience. As a child, his family was forced to flee Nazi invaders, hiding in the mountains of Valla Rocca while his courageous mother risked her life to scrounge food and supplies for their survival. After enduring years of hardship—and losing four siblings to the harsh conditions—Bruno and his family immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1950, where his father had built a new life. It was in Pittsburgh that a once-sickly boy, who had contracted rheumatic fever as a child, transformed himself through sheer determination into one of the most physically imposing and beloved athletes in the world.

Sammartino made his professional wrestling debut on October 23, 1959, and quickly became a phenomenon. Known as “The Living Legend” and “The Italian Strongman,” his combination of brute strength, genuine charisma, and authentic character made him the most popular professional wrestler of his era. He held the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship for a record-setting 2,803 consecutive days—a reign that has never been matched—and went on to hold the title for a combined total of over 4,040 days across two championship runs. At his peak, Sammartino reportedly bench-pressed 565 pounds, and his drawing power was so immense that he sold out Madison Square Garden an unmatched 188 times.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto remembered him as “one of the greatest ambassadors the city of Pittsburgh ever had.” Olympic gold medalist and WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, himself a Pittsburgh native, called Sammartino “a hometown hero.” In 2013, after years of estrangement, Bruno reconciled with WWE and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame—a moment celebrated around the world as a long-overdue recognition of one of the sport’s founding icons. He passed away on April 18, 2018, at the age of 82, in the city he had called home for nearly seven decades.

A Message from the Sammartino Family

The Sammartino family is excited to give Bruno’s intensely loyal, worldwide fanbase a direct, equal opportunity to own a tangible piece of his historic legacy. These are items that Bruno personally earned and cherished. The family wants the people who cheered for the “Living Legend” to have the chance to bring his memory into their own homes.

By utilizing an open bidding platform, every fan, collector, and interested homebuyer stands on a level playing field, with the market determining the true value of these historic items. The Sammartino family is proud to invite the community and fans alike to participate in this monumental event, ensuring Bruno and Carol’s legacy is celebrated openly, efficiently, and with the utmost integrity.
