Toronto, Canada, June 4, 2015 – Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region (www.HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is reacting to the Canadian Medical Association’s call for a comprehensive home care strategy in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia—the two provinces with the highest rate of seniors per capita. —
“The lack of senior’s housing is turning into a crisis situation,” says Brian Shevel, president of Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region. “With the high density of seniors in both of these provinces, real problems are starting to show. Hospitals are becoming overcrowded and many seniors are stuck waiting to get into senior homes or for the proper home care support.”
Chris Simpson, president of the Canadian Medical Association, is reiterating the call for home care, saying, “It’s only going to get worse unless we come up with a clear plan on how we’re going to do things differently.” (Source: “Canadian Medical Association joins call for better home care,” CBC News web site, May 21, 2015; http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/canadian-medical-association-joins-call-for-better-home-care-1.3081842.)
Simpson adds that more can be done to make senior’s home care more “robust,” which will help ease some of the tension currently weighing on hospitals that spend up to $1,000 per day for long-term care for seniors.
Shevel suggests that New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are microcosms of what is essentially a Canada-wide problem and home care issues need to be addressed immediately to help struggling seniors.
“Home care is certainly the more affordable route, but families aren’t simply concerned with costs; they need to know that their loved one will be well taken care of by skilled caregivers who can properly accommodate the necessary requirements,” concludes Shevel. “We at Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region try our best to meet the home care needs of as many seniors as we can in Toronto and Vaughan. We know we are part of the solution, but also recognize the need for a national endeavour so all seniors are offered the same care received by those we serve at Home Care Assistance.”
