“The — IHC Forum Conferences are electric!” Dr. Tom Umbach of Blossom Bariatrics enthusiastically states. “These conferences actively engage HealthCare reform and provide solutions that benefit businesses and--ultimately--families and individuals.”
This year’s conference touts that attendees will “take home cost-saving, empowering tools, top quality solutions and a clear understanding of what’s going on in the HealthCare Consumerism marketplace” through presentations, panels, workshops, and exhibition floor table top discussions. In particular, Dr. Tom Umbach will be on-hand Tuesday, November 11th from 11:45am-12:45pm in Booth 200 to present “Trim the Fat At a Fraction of the Cost.”
Foreshadowing his table top discussion, Dr Tom explains, “Via weight loss surgery, employers can empower themselves to reduce--or entirely eliminate--certain insurance costs by reducing or eliminating the risks associated with employee obesity: diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, sleep apnea, depression, and more. In fact, these savings can be substantial--hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.”
A study published in the May/June issue of American Journal of Health Promotion quantifies, “A healthy weight employee costs you on average $3,830 per year in medical costs, sick days, short-term disability, and workers’ compensation claims. But as your employees’ Body Mass Index climbs above 25, your costs start to rise significantly--in fact, you may be paying as much as $8,067 per morbidly obese person, per year.”
“That’s amazing, isn’t it?” Dr. Tom asks rhetorically. “In short, obesity can cost you twice as much money per employee each year!”
Dr Tom laments, “Insurance should make healthcare accessible, but according to a recent AP report, ‘Nearly two-thirds of health plans sponsored by employers don't cover weight loss surgery, which can cost between $15,000 and $25,000.’ As a result, employee and employer costs remain high or increase, because obesity-related health issues are only treated symptomatically--not resolved.”
Concluding on a positive note, Dr. Tom shares, “However, employers who provide self-funded healthcare plans that provide for weight loss surgery find that the long-term effects not only benefit their wallet, but also employees’ health and productivity.”
