High Desert Medical College (HDMC) of Bakersfield, California, has expanded its range of offerings for healthcare career training programs, and now offers a Vocational Nursing diploma program, designed to be completed in 56 weeks, as well as an Associate of Applied Science, Vocational Nursing degree program, designed to be completed in less than 2 years. The Vocational Nursing programs add to HDMC Bakersfield’s slate of healthcare training programs, including Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, and Medical Billing and Coding.

The Vocational Nursing programs add to HDMC Bakersfield’s profile of programs that cater to students motivated to enter the healthcare field. Healthcare workers are in high demand nationwide, and the field of nursing, in particular, is growing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, employment for Licensed Practical and Vocational Nurses is projected to grow by 9% over the 2019-2029 decade. The employment growth in the vocational nursing sector is much faster than the average rate of growth for all sectors and will add a projected 65,700 jobs to the economy (BLS 2021).

HDMC’s Vocational Nursing programs prepare students with the skills to provide basic nursing care, administer medications, document a patient’s signs and symptoms, and perform therapeutic and rehabilitative measures. Students in the Licensed Vocational Nursing diploma program take five required core classes, including Fundamentals of Nursing and Medical-Surgical Nursing. The LVN diploma program can be completed in 56 weeks, and graduates receive a Certificate of Completion. Graduates of the Vocational Nursing diploma program are also prepared to test for licensure. The program tuition is the NCLEX/PN exam cost, BVNPT Application for Licensure by Exam, and the LVN IV Therapy Certification and Blood Withdrawal class.

HDMC’s Associate of Applied Science, Vocational Nursing Program (VN AAS) complements the LVN diploma program, offering graduates of the LVN diploma program or a similar qualifying LVN program the choice to continue their education and training. Students who enroll in the AAS Vocational Nursing program complete an additional 48 weeks of General Education and science courses, including an Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Human Anatomy, Microbiology, and Human Physiology. These General Education and science courses are offered online and are required to enter a Registered Nursing Program. Students in the VN AAS program develop enhanced critical thinking skills, greater scientific knowledge, and quality verbal/written communication skills, becoming more well-rounded professionals and more qualified candidates.

HDMC Bakersfield’s Vocational Nursing programs include a combination of classroom study and clinical practice in a hospital or other healthcare setting, so students gain theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. HDMC’s VN programs are approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. HDMC is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) and is licensed by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Accreditation and approval guarantee students, faculty and the public that the programs at HDMC meet objective and rigorous third-party standards of educational practices.

High Desert Medical College offers hybrid, hands-on, and online classes to train students for medical careers in a short amount of time. Hands-on training from industry professional faculty prepares students for success in their chosen healthcare careers upon graduation. HDMC’s Vocational Nursing programs are designed to prepare graduates for careers as a Vocational Nurse and/or pursue further training to become a Registered Nurse.
