-- When Hailiang Copper Texas Inc. (HCTI) first broke ground on its 200-acre site west of Houston in 2018, it brought with it a $150 million promise to American manufacturing. But since then, the company has found that building a presence in Texas requires more than just pouring concrete and installing machinery—it requires showing up for the community in the ways that matter most.

After navigating the supply chain headaches and delays of a global pandemic, HCTI’s first production line is now officially rolling. With two more lines on the way, the facility is scaling up to produce 100,000 metric tons of copper tube every year. For the HVAC, plumbing, and refrigeration industries across the Americas, this means they no longer have to look across an ocean for high-quality ACR and water tube; they can find it right here in Sealy.
However, the real story isn't just about the copper leaving the factory—it’s about the people coming into it.
Over the last six months, HCTI has held six hiring events across Sealy and Bellville. These weren't just formal interviews; they were opportunities for the company to meet nearly 800 local residents. To date, HCTI has extended 213 job offers, giving hundreds of families the chance to trade a long, hour-plus commute for a career just down the road.
“We don’t just set up a table and collect résumés,” says Drew Paulson, HCTI’s HR Manager. “We spend time talking about where this industry is going. People are often surprised to see that modern manufacturing isn't what they imagined—it’s about automation, skilled trades, and real career growth. We’re showing them they can build a future right here.”
That effort to change perceptions starts with the next generation. This spring, HCTI opened its doors to students from Sealy High School for Manufacturing Day, giving them a front-row seat to how industrial goods are made and shipped globally. The team has also been a fixture at local career fairs in Bellville and Brazos, talking to hundreds of seniors about technical roles that keep them rooted in their home county.
The company’s involvement also reaches into the smaller, everyday moments of local life. This summer, HCTI delivered 1,000 pens and pencils to Sealy ISD campuses to help teachers stock their classrooms. Brand Specialist Mercedes Bencomo recently spent time at Sealy and Selman Elementary schools for "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR) Day, sharing stories with students.
“Seeing the kids’ faces light up over a book reminds you why showing up matters,” Bencomo said. “We aren’t just an employer in the area; we’re part of the community where these kids are growing up.”
HCTI has also made it a priority to support the people who keep Austin County safe. Beyond holiday visits to the Sealy Police and Fire Departments, the company has put real resources behind its gratitude. This includes a $15,000 donation to Austin County EMS to bolster emergency response, alongside support for the Cat Spring Volunteer Fire Department and the local Fantasy of Lights program.
Whether it’s sponsoring the Austin County Fair or participating in Sealy Chamber of Commerce events, HCTI’s leadership has focused on building relationships through direct dialogue with local officials like County Judge Lapham. These aren't just photo ops; they are the kind of ongoing conversations that build genuine trust.
At the end of the day, HCTI doesn't want to be known simply as a large international corporation. The goal is much more personal: to be the neighbor that stays, the employer that cares, and a company that Austin County is proud to call its own.
