HB Publications Releases 12 Step Recovery Workbooks Based on the Pentateuch

Each workbook leads the recovering addict through a month of 12 step exercises inspired by verses from the Five Books of Moses; Instructor Guides also published.

HB Publications, LLC, the publisher of media that aids in addiction recovery, announced today that it has released a set of 12 step exercise workbooks based on the Five Books of Moses or Pentateuch. These five “For I Will Be With You” workbooks, drawn from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, respectively, each give readers 31 daily reflections and 12 step journal exercises. The workbooks enable a recovering addict to go through the 12 steps of AA five times in five months using the Bible as inspiration.

“These workbooks are designed to help people of faith who are struggling with addiction,” said Boruch Binyamin, the religious Jewish author of the workbooks. He also wrote the year-long book of daily reflections, For I Will Be With You, on which they are based. “AA does not focus on any particular sect. This is the right approach for many people, but some may find it helpful to connect their 12 step work with the Bible, a spiritual text they already know.”

The workbooks’ insights are based on ideas gleaned from classical Torah commentary. Each day covered by a workbook discusses a verse from one of the Five Books of Moses and then provides an AA meditation, thought questions and a 12-step journaling exercise. For example, on Day 2 of the Exodus Workbook, the reading is from Exodus 1:8 — “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.” This famous verse starts the story of the Israelites descent into slavery in Egypt. The workbook connects this verse to the first step of AA, “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.” The journaling exercise asks the reader to think about how addiction might have made them “forget” important people in their lives.

The company is also releasing an accompanying set of five Instructor Guides designed to help treatment professionals at rehabilitation centers lead discussions based on the Workbooks. Boruch Binyamin is the pseudonym of a 51-year-old man who is in recovery from alcoholism. The books can be ordered at www.hbpubs.com.
