Gym chain sparks debate with London billboard offering Dubai self-defence retreats amid soaring phone thefts

-- UAE-based fitness operator GymNation has announced the launch of a new Self-Defence Retreat initiative in Dubai, offering UK residents the opportunity to participate in a structured training program focused on personal safety, confidence, and overall wellbeing.

As part of the initiative, GymNation is offering complimentary retreat placements through a dedicated registration campaign in select areas of London. The program is designed to introduce participants to practical self-defence techniques, situational awareness training, and stress-management practices within a professional fitness environment.

The campaign has attracted attention due to its unconventional presentation. Some passers-by and social media users noted the creative’s playful, tongue-in-cheek tone, particularly in its use of QR codes and concise messaging designed to encourage engagement. GymNation said the creative approach was intended to draw awareness to the retreat program in an accessible and light-hearted manner.

The Dubai Self-Defence Retreat will be led by Jason Woodham, a UAE-based self-defence instructor with extensive experience in practical safety awareness and confidence-building programs. Woodham said the training is designed to focus on preparedness and self-awareness rather than physical confrontation.

“Self-defence is about awareness, composure, and decision-making. The aim is to help people feel more confident in how they move through everyday environments,” Woodham said.

The retreat integrates guided physical training sessions, urban awareness workshops, and stress-management techniques. Sessions are structured to be suitable for participants with varying fitness levels and no prior self-defence experience.

Rory McEntee, Chief Marketing Officer at GymNation, said the initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to holistic health and wellness.

“This program is an extension of how we approach fitness. It brings together physical movement, mental resilience, and practical skills in a structured and inclusive way,” McEntee said.

The timing of the retreat coincides with the peak winter travel season, when UK residents increasingly seek wellness-focused experiences abroad. Dubai has continued to expand its offerings in fitness tourism, with GymNation’s facilities providing the operational infrastructure to host visiting participants.

The Self-Defence Retreat will run weekly from Saturday, 15 November until 20 December, beginning at 8:00 a.m., and will be held at GymNation’s Al Quoz location in Dubai. Advance registration is required, and spaces are limited.
